Synchronized glitch.

Greetings!

We rented an ETC ColorSource 40 AV from a local supplier to see if it would be a suitable replacement for our old ETC board (I don't remember what it was). However, we noticed if we left the board on for a long period of time (2+ hours), we would start to see several of our lights briefly flash the color red.

A bit about our setup:

I am a volunteer and know enough to get my hands dirty making cables and the basics of DMX, although I've never had to do advanced troubleshooting using a DMX reader. I mapped all of our lights into the Light board.

"Group A": 3 similar lights: (will fill in information when I can)

"Group B": 2 similar lights: (will fill in information when I can)

"Group C, D": No issues that I can tell. If they are flashing red, they are being drowned out by the other lights.

When these flashes occur, there are no visible power surges and the light board is on a surge-protector.

All lights - even the ones I haven't mentioned are daisy chained to each other, with a terminator at the end of the chain. All lights are on 1 Universe.

Light-board is located at the back of the church. There may be a mix of DMX cable and Microphone cable in the daisy chain. There is a terminator at the end of the chain, but I don't know anything about it. I've been encouraging the powers-that-be to replace all the cable with proper DMX cable, but there are 2 soft-blocks:

1) Cost. This is always a factor, but especially on a tight-budget.

2) I can't pin this issue down to a cabling problem. If I can, allocating budget towards this would be justifiable. If this is a cabling/terminator issue, an example or explanation from your experience that I can bring before the leadership would be most welcome. :)

--

Either Group A or Group B OR both groups will flash all-red briefly. With an Interval between 1 and 4 minutes between flashes (with some variance). This is occurring during live church services and has caused us to at least at one point, kill all lights. We noticed that the issue would appear faster if we left the console "off" but still had the power plugged in.

To temporarily resolve, we power-down the console, unplug the power cord, then plug it back in and turn it on. This resolves the problem for about an hour or two, then the problem returns. I have tried different DMX speeds as well, but none seem to have any affect on the issue. Powering down the console without removing the power cord makes the problem come back faster.

This behavior was not present at all on our old light board, which worked flawlessly, but wasn't really made for Color LED lights. So we figured it was the rental board itself as all of the DMX issues I've seen or read about mention nothing of experiencing the same specific glitch on multiple lights that are resolved with restarting the Light Board.

-------------

We suspected the issue may have been with the board, so we decided to purchase the same model board from the local company as we really do like the ColorSource 40 AV. Much to our dismay, we are experiencing the same exact issue. The above steps to temporarily resolve the problem work. I scrounged the Internet for similar problems, but I'm not really finding anything quite like what I'm seeing.

Any ideas? Need more information? Feel free to ask "stupid" questions too - I'll answer everything as best as I can and will get further information as fast as I can.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

  • I have a potato-quality video that I'll link to as soon as I can rip the audio and shorten it to the relevant flash part.
  • Would it be possible for you to send us the console logs? The log should be generated right after you notice a flicker to ensure that if there's an issue in the console it's included within the log's time span. You can export the logs to a connected USB memory stick by using the Setup>Files>Advanced>Export Logs function. Then please send the logs to us at colorsourceconsole AT etcconnect.com

    Thanks much -

    Sarah
  • Will do!

I also reached out to a local rep who suggested disabling "RDM", so I'll be testing this out as well.

With RDM enabled, I only noticed issues when going into the patch mode, where one of our lights on DMX channel 1 will flash VERY reliably. But if I leave patching mode, the flashing on that light stops - but maybe other lights start flashing. Thanks for looking into this! I'll submit logs as soon as I can.
  • Hello,

In the ColorSource console, RDM is only on when you're a) in the Patch screen and b) have RDM enabled.  So, your experience makes total sense if your lights would glitch from RDM.  When you leave Patch, RDM is turned back off (which is why they stop flashing).  I would doubt that your older ETC board had RDM at all.

Thank you for sending the logs to us.  We'll ask the developers to have a look.

  • I haven't heard anything from anyone yet, but I figured I'd add 2 videos to peruse:

    "Synchronized light flashes": www.youtube.com/watch

Also, we noticed our Purple Playbacks button blinks quite a bit as well - again, this was noticed on 2 separate brand-new boards. Not sure if it is related to our light blinking issue.

  • May 2017 ::We trialled (with a view to buying) a CS20 board to run a simple rig of 10 fresnels/spots and 4 LEDs ( we have a 12 channel dimmer). After a succesful number of runs at general rehearsals. the lights failed to respond when we switched on for the Technical Reahersal/ Preview night which included local critics and press. We could find no 24/7 Help line in Australia and resorted to calling Hong Kong. Issue could not be resolved in time for the show and we hardwired a few floods to get us through the performance.

Next day further trials confirmed our cables and dimmer were OK but that the CS20 DMX output was not stable and failed about 10%-20% of the time.

Subsequent advice from Hong Kong was to upgrade software v 1.0.9 to v1.1.1 which also required an update the Firmware. This had the effect of stabilising the outpout and we continued to run the show for 2 weeks without further incident.

We note that the Upgrade notes describe 52 issues were dealt with (includes Av and some resolved with workarounds) and that there are 31 remaining known issues

    QUESTIONS
Have CS20 users had similar experiences. The error experienced on v1.0.9 was a' fatal error' as far we were concerned- is it/was it common or is it peculiar to the one console we happened to trial?

Are the remaining Known Issues something I should be careful about?
  • FYI, I still have not heard from anyone at ETC after I sent the logs. We have since discovered we might have our DMX signal running through a very long XLR audio cable right next to power conduit. Currently investigating...

I also wanted to point out that at some point, I had installed the latest available software version on the board, but after doing that, I haven't checked for any further updates. If there are, I will update the board with the latest.
  • Hello! Was this issue ever resolved? I have had a similar issue which keeps popping up.  Software updates and turning off RDM were my gotos, but I have heard that the issue has returned.  I did do a software update a few months ago, and I think i'll go back and see if that turned RDM back on.

I see the glitch as a brief blacking out and I always thought it had to do with running running multiple effects and their "colliding".

However another person on our crew thatI ihas been running the lights for the last few months keeps asking me if I notice the red flash,  I'd love to know how it turned out for you because I think we are dealing with the same problem as yours. It is barely noticeable for us though.
