Number DMX dimmers that can be controlled

The specifications for the CS series of consoles is very vague.  The claim is to be able to have 40 / 80 channels of control on the CS20 / CS40 respectively.

But does a user have access to the entire universe(s) when using the console?  I mean if the venue has 200 dimmers (and conventional fixtures), and no intelligent light inventory, would the console be able to run a show using this inventory - all the fixtures / dimmers individually controlled?  I am willing to dial up the dimmers / fixtures using the keypad - as on other consoles.  But the question is whether this is possible or not.

  • Channels are merely handles to control a dimmer or a fixture. The Standard has 1 universe of Hardline DMX, the AV has 5. 2 hardline but all 5 universes it can operate can be controlled through sACN via network. if you need to have individual handles for each dimmer for live busking you would run out of handles pretty quickly. The intent of channels of control allows for easier manipulation of multi parameter fixtures. By selecting a channel, all associated parameters are accessible without having to do the math in your head to access any particular attribute like color mixing which can be quite a number of DMX addresses. if you have 80 fixtures in 5 different types of fixtures with multiple parametes of varying counts, its easier to grab a fixture then hit color or any other feature and access the feature the exact same way for all fixtures. 80 Source4 fixtures in direct+7 mode would be 1200 dmx addresses. 80 Revolutions with Shutters or similar count fixtures would be 2480. You might need to consider an Element 2 or other advanced console as the ColourSource might not be as advanced in capabilities as you might need. (edited for clarity and corrections.)

Clarified that all 5 universes are available to sACN, and that there is only one hardline output on a Standard

  • All ETC consoles are "One Channel is One Independent Light"

It does not matter whether that light needs one DMX address or fifty - It's still one light, so still just one Channel.
Select that one Channel and you get complete control over everything the luminaire/device does.

    40 or 80 Channels means 40 or 80 independently-controlled luminaires (or devices)
    - It doesn't matter whether they are dimmers, LEDs, or all-singing-all-dancing moving lights.
