it's past 2.9 you will get 1024. so even if you skip it and go 2.7 to 3.0 you will get 1024 outputs. So rumors aside it do not matter.

Beta testing takes as long as it needs to generally.  2.9 was released in open beta about a week ago.  If no major errors are found and the small ones can be fixed easily expect to see 2.9 released in about a month?  ...and as Jolsson said, any version after 2.9 will also support 1024 outputs (until they raise the bar again and give us more again some time in the future...).
