EOS RPU or Ion Xe RPU for Ion

Our theater currently has a Win 7 Ion and we are looking at getting an RPU with planning that we might be getting a new building in the next 2-3 years that will be 4 spaces with the plan to have a RPU for playback in each space and either an Ion Xe or a Gio @5 in addition to our current Ion for programing shows, we would like all the RPUs to be the same so...

1 - Can you use an Ion on the Eos RPU or it is limited to use with the Ion/Ion Xe RPU?

2 - Can a Gio @5 be used with a Ion/Ion Xe RPU?

  • The consoles and RPUs are able to mix and match - any console will work with any RPU.

What you need to be aware of is the output count - in each system, the smaller of the output counts in the primary and backup devices will be the total output count for the entire system.

So if you have a 24k output Gio @5 and use it as a primary or backup with a 2k output Ion RPU, then you will only be able to use 2048 outputs in that system (because the Ion RPU is the smaller output count).

If you need to output more than 12k outputs, you will need a 24k EOS RPU because the Ion RPU maxes out at 12k.

You can run the systems with the RPU as primary and the consoles as clients, but then you lose the ability to have a backup take over if the RPU goes down.

It might be  a good idea to talk to your local ETC dealer and draw up some system layouts- they will help you get exactly what you need to use the systems most efficiently.
