With Hog3 it was advised NOT to use SSDs as there was no performance gain, what with the Hog3 software writing very many small files. Since the new consoles have SSDs, does it mean that issue has been overcome? Does the Hog software not deal with many small files now, or has this writing process just been streamlined somehow? And what all this questioning is leading to is: Can I now install an SSD into my Hog4PC remote tablet?
I have a Samsung 830 installed in my MacBook Pro Running Bootcamp when using HOG4PC Great SSD, very fast. You could have done this before in your tablet, but the HOG3PC software wouldn´t have any more performance. The PC itself gains some performance in boot time for example
I recall being advised against using SSD with Hog3PC-- that there would actually be a performance loss due to the sheer number of writes that occur. Has that changed?
Yes, the whole line of Hog4 consoles now uses SSDs, which is what sparked my question. The whole line of consoles also runs on linux. I suppose the best way to know if it's going to work well for me is to test it on an SSD, and observe.
If you are interested in some details around the fastest SSDs on the market check out this site: www.fastestssd.com. I have about 20 SSDs across my machines at home totaling about 5TB. They are all consumer grade. I have the potential of getting one of the very performant PCI Express SSDs or a fibre channel attached high capacity flash array for evaluation for a project I am working on. If I do and things go well during the testing I may post some results here. Unfortunately, right now I cannot share any details about what I am using the high end SSD / flash for.
SSDs are quieter, generally more reliable, and do offer some read/write speed bumps for most computer disk operations but by no means are they required for Hog 4PC operation and in most cases you will not see any noticeable impact in upgrading to an SSD.
The biggest benefit in the world of the Hog 4 OS is that we no longer archive and unzip the full library with each show file which cuts down tremendously on the number of files being written to disk for each show file.
I did get a SSD installed in my Roadhog but it took so long to install (cloning disk images because it wouldnt install directly) and after the first software update it would require hours of work to do the update I decided to remove it.
I did observe greatly improved boot times and no problems running a show although I did not run very big shows while it was fitted.
As someone else mentioned I also have a SSD in my macbook which I use for sometimes for Hog PC and have noticed no problem at all.
Thanks Chris for that bit of info. I'm looking not so much for a performance increase, but rather a more rugged option for my tablet that draws less power than a spinning motor. I'll give it a shot.
