Help with Fixture Builder Customized labels

Hello All,

I am working in the Fixture Builder, and was hoping To apply some custom labels to features. As an example I have made a channel with

Function    "  Fixture Control  "

But would like to be able to create custom features under that channel type, as well as others I.e.: giving custom names to a gobo slot

I know you can export Fixtures to XML Files,    I use Notepad++ and have downloaded the XML Schema File "Fixture" from the link.

though it seems custom naming breaks the file, so there must be a reference to each of the allowed " Features " ?

Is this completely inaccessible from the user side? or could references be added to allow custom names to work?

Are the Devs open to adding some more Features under a couple of Functions?

I think long game, it would be nice to allow Users to create fixtures with user created naming of Features, I fully understand that creating a custom function would probably break several things, but I imagine features which sit below the Functions should be possible.

Thanks for your time, I've been using this stuff since it had wood panels on the sides, and have been a beta tester, so I hope there is some possibility here.

  • The main reason we do not allow random feature names is because it breaks the "Change Type" functionality of the console. Let's say you make custom labels for fixture A. You even do some programming for it. Perfect!

Now you arrive at the venue, and they don't have fixture A, they only have fixture B. You change type to fixture B, and press the play button on your first cuelist. Nothing happens.

This would be because fixture B doesn't have any of the random feature names for fixture A in his profile. As the cuelist is processed, the programmed data is skipped because none of that data association lives on fixture B.

This introduces a term we call "fixture modeling", where you should choose from the provided built in list of functionalities when creating fixture libraries. When 2 fixtures are modeled in a similar fashion you will get the most bang for the buck out of change type.

Having said that, we understand the usefulness of what you are requesting. The first step would be to enhance the "Change Type" functionality to give you a user interface comparing source and target fixtures, allowing you to make assignments from the source fixture to the target fixture for programmed elements that are not the same on both fixtures.

In the 4.2 software this got a little better, as we change programmed color mixing systems for you behind the scenes; i.e. a "blue-ish" color on an RGB fixture will also show a "blue-ish" if you change type to a CMY fixture.

  • Hi Chris, thanks for the reply,

I wouldn't expect that people making custom fixtures would assume that they would port over to other fixtures, at least I don't have that expectation. I'm coming at this from a venues perspective, where we have some customized fixtures that would be wonderful to have more clear naming of Features.

As an example we have 4 moving fixtures, with video cameras for heads,

Under Fixture Control, there are already a few camera control features, though several more Features would be appreciated

I have seen the other "media related " Functions including Camera, Media, and Projector as well, though also still lacking some Features.

Examples of Features I would find useful would be

    Frame Rate (FPS) 24, 30, 50, 60, 120 etc.

    Resolution (NTSC, PAL, 720, 1080, 2K, 4K, 4k DCI, etc)

    Auto Aperture

    Auto White Balance

    Auto Focus

    Color Bars (On, OFF)

I have built a DMX-SDI Bridge, and have been controlling these cameras from our lighting desk, this works quite well, though as I mentioned the names of the Features are clunky,

I'm using Feature " Preset " to set the resolution, though all I see at the console is a number, I have to know that preset 3 is 1080P as an example.

I have managed to find some which work well enough, I found White Adjust, though " White Balance " would be better.

similar Feature " Frame " I'm using for Frame Rate.

    thanks again,
    Peter
