Unison & LED fixtures

We are in early discussions of cosmetic renovation plans.  Someone has asked if we can replace our existing house lights with an LED source.

The quick question is:  Does a Unison processor output DMX?  OR will we have to upgrade our architectural control depending on which type of LED unit we go with?

BTW - There is a planned discussion and site visit with our preferred ETC installer.  That will not be for several months.

  • The Unison processor is capable of outputting DMX, but this will likely also require a change to the configuration.  That's something to discuss with your friendly neighborhood tech when they pay you a visit in a couple months.

If you're also looking at screw-in replacement LED lamps, then you will definitely want to do some compatibility testing with samples of the products you're going to use before committing to buy a large quantity.  There's a lot of disappointment in the LED retrofit market right now because there isn't really any standard for what it means when a manufacturer writes "dimmable" on their product.  The only way to know for sure that they meet your requirements is to get some and try them.

DMX controlled fixtures will definitely be compatible from a control standpoint because DMX512 is a pretty a well-established standard.  However, you will still probably want to get a sample/demo of whatever you're thinking of using to make sure it meets your dimming performance requirements.
