Connecting a lighting console to Unison CMed

I work in a venue that has a Unison CMed controlling conventional fixtures. It would be nice to be able to control it with a console. There's an element 2 in the building and ETC nomad's

is it possible to connect them to the CMed for control?

is there a way to add a 5-pin DMX input to the unit?

  • Hi Owlshots,

Unison CMed can be controlled by DMX, but it is a punched wire and would usually go out to a 1 gang DMX Input box usually near your booth or tech position and have the Element just use dmx cable to plug into that dmx input port and usually it woudl send Universe 1 from the Element console to control the dimmers.

It is very likely ETC has the original drawings for your building if you can find an ETC  job number posted somwhere or serial number of the CMeD processor that usually allows us to track down the original info.  Or let us know the venue/building you are at and we can try and find it that way.

While there are certainly systems that just have an Architectural Controller and button station only hooked up to them, at least 50% of them probably have DMX running into the processor for external control. So there's a chance it's just hiding somewhere in your space.

If you do need to add something like the above I'd suggest reaching out to your local ETC dealer to discuss and could send a tech out to assist:

They could also certainly offer some modern options to update that system as well as it is running on a floppy disc.

  • Hey Chris! really appreciate that.

I found a job number from way back in 2005. Whats the best way to get someone from ETC to look up the details?
