DMX Addressing with Multiple Paradigm Units

Hello,

I have a question about multiple Paradigm controllers and how Unison would deal with them.

If I have one paradigm controller per floor of a four floor complex, can i address each floor starting at #1? The control system overall has one Unison Paradigm Touchscreen unit, there are also 1 - 2 ETC gateway ports and DMX splitters for each floor. We would like to split control of each floor but keep addressing simple on each floor unit 1 DMX address 1 etcetera without having channel one turn on four fixtures throughout the complex.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi TR.

Based on your comment that there is only one touchscreen, I'm going to make the assumption you are connecting the paradigm processors on each floor all together via a switch and a lighting network?

While the fixtures on each floor can each start with DMX Address 1, they will each want to be in their own universe of control.

Most people would layout a pattern.

    Floor 1:  Universe 1
    Floor 2:  Universe 2
    Floor 3:  Universe 3
    Floor 4:  Universe 4.

And then I would just match your ETC Gateways to output to the same universe as the processor.

Of course if you need more than one universe of control per floor just come up with your own documentation standard.

Additionally I wanted to mention each Paradigm Process can handle 2 universes of address (1024 parameters).  Paradigm will soon to be able to do 4 universes per processor on the new mkII model).  So while there is a simplicity of putting processor per floor, you might be able to design this with less processors.  But that totally depends on layout, expectations of control, is each floor a different company and want access.

If you had more information about total dmx requirements or fixture layout and needs we can certainly assist in more detailed information.

  • Thanks for the swift and informative reply, Chris. What is the best way to reach you or someone from ETC outside of the forum, with a more detailed question?
