Do i really have to put the console in hibernation before shutdown?

The user manual recommand to put the console in hibernation mode (holding the stage map button for three seconds) before disconnecting the power. As i understand, the console finishes any pending save operation during this time. What is there to be saved? If i haven't made any modification that i need the console to save, do i need to use the hibernation procedure? I would like to put all my devices on a AC timer to be sure that everything is shutdown when not in use and not consomming useless energy. Is that really a problem if i shutdown the power on the Colorsource 40 if it's not in hibernation?
