Does a DMX channel have to be patched to a fixture for an independent to work, and what takes priority, the independent or the console control, and does it matter if the channel is controlling an HTP or LTP parameter?

Independents override the rest of the console.
It doesn't matter whether the DMX slots in your Independents are patched anywhere else or not, the level from the Independents will be output.
Thank you, Richard. They are very useful for keeping strobes open but I had one instance which didn’t seemed to work, probably a mistake by me.
I am still having trouble trying to force a strobe channel ‘open’, i.e. 255, using an independent. I have tried various channels on my current patch and it appears Independents override unpatched and HTP type DMX channels, e.g. intensity and colour mix. They do not seem to override LTP type parameters which explains my problem. Is this a feature or fault?
