Does a DMX channel have to be patched to a fixture for an independent to work, and what takes priority, the independent or the console control, and does it matter if the channel is controlling an HTP or LTP parameter?

Independents override the rest of the console. 
 It doesn't matter whether the DMX slots in your Independents are patched anywhere else or not, the level from the Independents will be output.
