With regards to the Personality Editor...

I have had a few lighting instruments for which I have had to create a personality file such as the latest Shehds 18x18 RGBQWUV Zoom instrument.  Every time I create a personality file it wipes out files created for other fixtures.  I can't get back to a previous fixture's personality file.  It would help if I could open and see the personality file that is currently in use but I haven't been able to figure out how to do that.

Case in point, I purchased a second Shehds instrument but the personality file that I created and used for the first one is no longer in my User Library.  If I could dump the personality file that the first instrument is currently using I would then be able to recreate the personality file for the second instrument.

I have a sense that I'm doing something wrong in my workflow with regards to the user personality library.  My thinking tells me that if I was able to successfully create and load a personality file, it should stay in my user library.  But that doesn't seem be true.

Any ideas?

Stephen

  • Hello,

I don't understand how you proceed, normally it's quite intuitive. The personal editor tool allows you to create a userlib.jlib file to put in the console. If you keep this file somewhere on your PC, you can always open it and add new Devices. see copy and modify them then put it back in the console.

  • Hello and thank you for replying to my query.  To some extent I find the personality editor intuitive, but it is lacking particular information in regards to some of the entries.  For instance, which fields must have the correct data (and what that data is) and which fields do not require specific data gleaned from the fixture.  I'm working with v3.3.0.26.  Initially I did not understand that the personality file that I generate is cumulative.  Therefore when I obtained a new device that was not listed in the standard personality file I would do my best to create one and upload it to the user library.  i.e. I would generate a user personality file for each new device that was not listed in the standard personality library.  So that was one of my errors causing my generated personality files to disappear.

I've done a fair amount of lighting for community theaters and houses of worship but this board is relatively new to me as I've only been using it in a community theater space for a little over a year.  I'm definitely not a 'pro' lighting guy.  The user manual for the personality editor doesn't help you with entering values in the mode and Color Mixing columns.  While it appears that Manufacture and Model Name columns appear to accept anything you can dream up, the Mode and Color Mixing columns are specific to the fixture.

The Shehds fixture screen shot that you posted is for an earlier model.  Shehds changed their profile in the Fall of 2023 and ETC hasn't upgraded their library to reflect that change yet.

I have a working 7 channel profile for this fixture but have been unable to create a 12 channel profile.  Here is a screen shot of what I have for the 12 channel thus far:

I'm about to submit a request to the personality creation folks in hopes that they came come up with a working 12 channel personality for me.  I don't really like crying 'uncle' though.

  • Hello, it's good if I could help you understand something.. No, my SHEHD 18x18 RGBWAV model is a 2024 asset model, it is current. I have the impression that you did not understand the concept of channel in the DMX frame. in the editor the main thing to respect is the Nr of the channel assigned to the function. According to your image, it will surprise me that the red is in channel 12 and the intensity in channel 1, it's not very usual! On this example start by changing the Nr of the channels by referring to that of the manufacturer., in addition at the top right you started from an RGBAW profile, but you have UV in addition, So you have to start over and take the correct profile of the color Nr.

  • Thanks for your request, I believe it has just arrived and is now in the queue.
However, the PDF attached to the request only has 11 and 7 channel modes, there isn't a 12 channel mode for this fixture.

SHEHDS is unfortunate as they have a lot of fixtures with almost identical names, which makes it rather difficult for people to find the one they have in the library.

Looking at the screenshot here, I believe I see the mistake:

When you chose RGBAW, the editor automatically created the Red, Amber, Green, Blue and White parameters for you, ready for you to update their DMX slots (called channels in the PDF)

However, you'd already created your own versions of these above.

If you delete CH5 RED through CH9 AMBER and update the DMX Coarse cells for Red, Amber ... White rows below to have the DMX CH numbers from the PDF, it will likely work.

I would however suggest removing the "CH #" prefix from each parameter name.
When you're using the console you don't care about the numbers, only what the parameter does.

PS: You're currently using an older version of the personality editor, the latest version has changed to put the emitter colors in the main dropdown to help avoid this kind of confusion.

  • Hi Richard - Yes, you are correct.  They think it's 12 channels but in reality it is only 11.  I agree, I wish they would have unique names for their products.

I see what you're saying regarding the RGBAW channels that I'm trying to configure.  I did not realize that the RGBAW would automatically configure the color channels.  I'll work on that and give it another try.

In reality this fixture should be RGBAW+UV but there isn't a mode for that.  I noted that some of the other profiles had that designation but I couldn't get it to come up with mine.  I thought I was working on the latest editor so will take care of that now.  Perhaps then I'll see the RGBAW+UV mode.

As always, thank you for your input!

  • My thanks to you again!  Richard mentioned some of that and I responded to him.  My editor did not show a mode selection that included the UV.  Hopefully, when I update my editor (I thought I was on the latest one but apparently not) this will make more sense to me.

I really appreciate your willingness to help!

  • With regards to the personality editor version...I'm on v3.3.0.26.  Is there a newer one?  That was the latest I could find listed.

  • Hi again Richard and PBo67!  Thanks to your help I think that I've hit the jackpot on the 12 (11) channel personality profile.  I could not find a RGBAWUV Color Mixing option in the editor's dropdown menu.  So I went ahead and just added another parameter for Violet.  Does that sound right to you guys?
