Hello
I've just used pixel maps for the first time in earnest - in this instance on a piece with 100 still images being projected (via qlab) which I wanted to be able to abstractly "reflect" onto the floor in front - it's worked quite nicely. I've ended up using 7 different Servers each with 10 layers, each server is for a different type of unit - a mix of B-Eyes, GLP washes and VLZ's
I've noticed a few things I'm not sure about, some of this may be me being thick but I thought I would mention (using 2.8 release):
BUGS
- Sometimes I’m unable to enter a number in the pixel map setup - command line shows errors if I hit a button that’s not allowed (such as through), but nothing happens when I press number. Restarting eos fixes this but it's rather annoying
- Layer throws an error if you add a channel without patching, server doesn’t
- I had some very weird issues with file/library data being lost - I'm still not sure what happened, but whatever it was happened far too often to be nice (when you have 100 cues to edit it's annoying) - as far as I can tell even though a layer was programmed into a cue, the layer channel's attributes were not properly activated (I don't know the correct word) into the cue list until I manually recorded them into the first cue of the show, instead most of the attributes for certain layer's channels were showing as empty (no value at all) with only file and library populated - even so when I changed the file and library values these changes would somehow revert. This isn't easy to explain but hopepfully makes soem kind of sense!
THOUGHTS
- In Blind Pixel Map Preview should show the values for that blind cue (or if that isn't possible the window shouldn't go grey suggesting it is showing the blind values)
- There should be an option for pixel map preview to automatically follow whichever server you are working on (ie typing 701enter would select server 700 of which 701 is a layer of)
- Ideally Pixelmap preview should also be able to show you a "normal" version of the media with crop marks - so you can see what you have done in terms of zoom etc, and also for some abstract maps check you are seeing the correct media
- When adding channels to a server/layer there should be an option for these channels to automatically be created in the patch - at the moment there's a boring extra step
- Is it possible for a Server and its layers to be a single multi-cell channel? If so this should be in the patch as it would be much nicer to work with
- Would be nice if there was a "scale to fill" and "scale to fit" mode for media sizes
- I found it tricky to write a macro to give me a file/library button, these don't seem to appear in the CIA's attributes box
- Would be great if I could take a pixel-map state and make it absolute on those channels (so I can then record it as a static state in a cue)
- Would also be great if there was a way of knowing of channels/attributes under pixelmap control
- Using Additive units (such as LED) it's not that intuitive that I have to set all the colours to 0 before pixel-map would work - it makes sense but is a bit confusing when you start out
- Using Subtractive units is a bit hit and miss, I suspect it was never planned for but I've found colours fade quite badly and jump a lot
- When using very few fixtures zoomed out on a file I often found colours would jiggle when cross-fading - I assume due to some kind of averaging of the covered pixels. Would be nice to be able to avoid this
- As I had 100 files but only 10 layers I had to flip back to layer 1 every 11 slides, however this would jump as the new layer would cut in on the old one - so instead I ended up creating an 11th layer below layer 1 so that I could fade in layer 10, then jump to layer 0 before going back to normal. Would be nice to find a way around this?
- Not just for pixel maps, it would be nice to be able to have a "by fixture" option when recording palettes for multi-cell fixtures (if layers could be such), so I can then create presets that work on all layers of a specific map
- Would be great to be able to "white balance" fixtures - maybe in patch?
- Would be nice to be able to increase the saturation of a colour in a layer - at the moment I seem to obly be able to subtract. I might be able to do this with an effect layer but that's an annoying extra step!
- Similar to my other issues, when I once replaced all my images with new versions (same name, done through file manager in the shell) a load of layers lost their reference to the file
I think that's it!
Thanks
