pc software wheelfade

Just started using the ion software on my pc.

Is it possible to configure my mouse wheel to emulate the fader wheel on the console in order to wheel up channel levels?

Thanks,

paul.

  • To my knowledge, this is not possible. I posted a similar query when I first started using Nomad, expecting that I would be able to drag a level wheel that I would find in the virtual keypad. If you’re wanting to achieve a tactile means of controlling levels without typing, the only solution I could suggest is the same as what I was told: record individual channels into submasters and then assign these respectively to virtual faders. Obviously it’s not the same as scrolling a wheel, but at least you can drag levels with a mouse click.
  • As Aaron says its not possible but two options do exist.

    1. If you select the channel(s) and use the Moving Light control tab you get a kind of control wheel on the screen you can click on.

    2. On a magic sheet I added a couple of buttons I set up as command and typed into one of them sneak .2 @ + 10 and the other sneak .2 @ - 10 so each time I press them it increases or decreases the intensity by 10 over 0.2 of a second, which gives you an easy to use fader.

As an aside if you've not got into magic sheets, they are really useful. I personally think that because ETC have made using the command line and buttons easy, people dont learn magic sheets early enough and then you get the comments that something like MA is easier for busking, one of the real differences is actually on MA any tutorial pretty much starts with their equivalent of magic sheets as out of the box their desk cant be used as easily, so any setup is configured to have everything you want quickly clickable. If etc then just fixed BPM then the two desks would be very close.
  • I have to say I really need to delve further into magic sheets myself. I’ve never went beyond using them simply as a means of drawing a virtual lighting plan. Any recommendations of useful functions to build into one?
  • I'm using it for busking, so one part of the sheet has the actual lights laid out as a plan of the rig, with each light setup to show its colour swatch, focus and intensity. I then have part of the sheet that's kind of like direct selects, so group buttons laid out next the areas in the plan. (so that means I can select lights either by clicking the individual fixture on the plan or the group). I have some "super groups" which actually run macros than are simply group 1 + group 2 etc, which means both as other lights get added to the real groups I dont need to add them to the super groups, but more importantly clicking them makes the group buttons show selected.

I have a bunch of colour pallete buttons (like a direct select) showing their colour, a bunch of labelled Focus Pallets l, a bunch of Preset buttons and a bunch of effect buttons (each with a small stop button next to them as well as a stop all)

I then have some command type of buttons, so I have a Clear command line, Out, Full, @30 @40 @50 ..., some sneak buttons ie Sneak 1, Sneak2,5,10,20 one that does Zoom so the sheet does a fit to screen and also a live button to put it back in live if for some reason I'm in blind (also I set the background colour of the whole sheet to be a horrid purple colour if its in blind as its too easy to think why is nothing happening if you are in blind when you think you are live)

So I could click a group,   click sneak 5,  click a colour  and the fixtures transition to that colour,  or I can do the same with the Focus Pallets or intensities.

I have the buttons for Sneak .2 @ + 10 for intensity I mentioned originally, I also have similar ones for Hue and Intensity (both a small increment and a larger one) well as the same idea for pan and tilt so I can nudge the position of a moving head more subtly than trying to use the ML control.

I also have a few specific buttons like house lights on/off haze on/off, set BPM, and some buttons that run some quite complex macros so I can set BPM values for Song1, Song2, Song3 etc and then when I click those buttons it applies the entered BPM value to all the effects. (If you want to know how that works I can give details).

I also have a set of buttons that unload the Master fader cue list and loads a new cue list to it so for when I actually want to run a pre built cue list I can click the button for that one and next Go moves to that.

I've generally got it set so never need to move off the sheet or touch the keys (other than GO) to busk the whole show. (I have record only and update on the sheet as well)

Hope that is of some use, it seems to work reasonably well and be easy enough for the less skilled operators to use successfully.
