coupla things on the EOS family

I have asked about this a few times and probably because it isn't very popular it has not been done but I sure would like to see it happen; "just for me" :-)

Like on the Congo's I would very much like to see the manual and video tutorials on the EOS family of consoles. As explained in the past, I don't always have access to the internet to look up something that I have either blanked out about or never knew. Printing out a manual is just chopping down too many trees and it's very hard to find things anyway in a paper manual.

If it could only be put on the consoles so we can look up things AND make notes like on the Congo's. To go along with that each time there is a software update the manual update could be included so I/we (for those who agree) don't have to refer back and forth between different versions of manuals and addendums.

Also, having the video's on the console makes it very convenient, especially for new users, to learn the consoles. Yes it would require speakers or headphones.

  • Hi Jeff

The request to add the manual is on the list but righty not very high. It's a balancing act but if we lose a developer for a week to add the manual and search within the manual this time could be much better spent on new features and adding to existing feature (Chris I'm sure could spend a year completing the Magic sheet request list). Also most people now have a laptop and or tablet with them most of the time. And Ueli has done an excellent job in making sure Help is up to date.

The video are going to be updated I think in the next 12 months as these are out of date now. I'm not sure it's right that these are in the console though, it seems to dangerous to me.

I think a whats new or changed is closer to happening but as most people don't spend the time reading the release notes I can see everyone just skipping over it.

I now leaving show notes in a magic sheet, maybe you could make one with useful notes and move it around.

I'd check back in a year to 18 months to see if the manual is closer to happening.

  • I definitely understand priorities. I just have never had any responses. The reasons I have been asking for the manual and videos is because of them being on the Congo's. The biggest reason for wanting the manual on the console rather than on our laptops is keeping what we have updated. Seems whole manuals aren't released each time but supplements and that gets confusing looking back and forth to find the most current answers. We have to constantly check for releases to update what is on our laptops. If the manual was updated each time a software update came out (at least when things in the manual actually changed) then the whole manual could be updated at the same time and would always be current. Only those changes would need to be changed in the whole manual. And Yep I Hear You, that takes time that the ETC staff does not have. Especially to initiate it. I completely understand. I don't know why videos would be dangerous unless there is something about the EOS line different than the Congo, or there was a problem with the Congo that caused their removal which I am unaware. Your suggestion on notes in a magic sheet is a good idea for those things we have already encountered and I will look into that. I won't need to check back to see if it's closer. We'll know when it's happening when we are told. :-)

The solution to that would be that each time a software update is released, a new manual is released in pdf format. It wouldn't be hard to revise the pdf manual each time a software update is released and you wouldn't need software developers for that. There used to be a wiki and I wish the manual was in wiki form.

Also, having the video's on the console makes it very convenient, especially for new users, to learn the consoles. Yes it would require speakers or headphones.

I never use the help key and would never use video or manual files stored on the console. It's so much easier to have the pdf manual open on my laptop and that way I can use the console normally while I'm referring to the pdf. It's really easy to search a pdf or to refer to the contents, which are hyperlinked to the text. I also like to copy and paste from the manual into "cheat sheet" files on my laptop.

We have to constantly check for releases to update what is on our laptops.

There is an email list you can subscribe to to get release update notices. The email and web pages should have direct links to the release update notes.

I'm guilty of posting a lot of minor requests and there should probably be a way to prioritize them based on usefulness and ease of implementation. Please keep Chris working on the magic sheet request list!
