Expression Offline crashes trying to load a show file

We have an ION and an Express 48/96, using both for teaching, doing shows in our black box and other venues, etc.

I have been using the Expression Offline editor for a while. It is particularly useful for copying patching information between the consoles using ASCII Import/Export features of the offline editors for both consoles.

Recently, however, the Expression Offline Editor (3.11) crashes any time I try to load a show, either from my hard disk or using a USB floppy drive. This happens both on my desktop and on my Macbook running Bootcamp.

I can't trace exactly when this started happening, but I suspect it might have something to do with recent updates to Windows 10.

Has anyone else run into this or - better yet - found a work-around.

are you trying to load a show that isn't named EXP2.SHW? that's the only name a showfile can have IIRC, but it has been a while...

Yes, I'm using the standard file name.
But the program crashes as soon as I try to load the file, before the actual file can be specified.

I would try running it as admin and/or in compatibility mode. If push comes to shove you might need to find an older PC...

Still no luck. The program runs fine until I try to open a file.
I'll try re-installing.

that might not help. there is always a point when a program is no longer compatible to an evolving operating system...

Are you on a 64 bit host OS? I run it successfully in a 32 bit Windows 7 VM via VMWare Player. Microsoft Virtual PC is also a possibility:

Yes, both my machines are running 64-bit Windows 10. I have used Virtual PC in the past and will probably give it a whirl.

Does anyone know which OS the Expression Offline Editor was written for?
I used some DOS programs that used multiple windows back in the 90s, so it wouldn't surprise me if it ran under DOS 6.22. Otherwise, I'd assume it ran under Win 95.

And, of course, there is Linux and Wine...
