Express/Emphasis Network Wiring

What is the wiring configuration for a CAT-5 cable running from an Express to an ethernet hub, which then runs to an Emphasis server?

  • It's standard Ethernet wiring.

    So it's a 'star' topology (hub/switch at the centre of the star), with the Cat5 terminated in EIA/TIA 568B RJ45 connectors, maximum path length of 100m between devices.
    - This is not quite the same as 100m of cable, as the twists inside make the cores longer than the cable.

    You can use straight-thru patch cables for the whole lot if it's a 'small' or 'temporary' setup - just plug one cable from Express to hub, another from hub to Emphasis server.
    - Cat5 patch cables are already wired to EIA/TIA 586B and are very cheap from your local computer store.

    For installation cabling:
    The IEEE recommend a maximum of 90m in-wall for installations to allow for patch leads at each end.
    Installation cabling should always be terminated at both ends with female RJ45 sockets, and you then use short Cat5 patch leads to connect the last couple of feet between the wallplate and the device (Console, Switch/Hub, Emphasis server etc), as that way it's much more reliable. Also, this means that if you accidentally damage the cable or connector as it goes into the console it's a quick and easy job to swap out a cheap patch cable, rather than having to try to reterminate a new RJ45 plug and then retest the cable.
