ETC Express

I have an ETC Express 8 pin console and I just had a few questions.

1. If I plug a monitor straight into the ETC Express console, will the software automatically show?

2. How do I patch lights?

3. There is no follow/hang button. How do I record a follow/hang cue?

  • 1. Monitor Connection

Yes, when you plug a monitor directly into the ETC Express console, the software interface should automatically display—assuming the monitor is compatible and powered on. Make sure:

    • The monitor is securely connected.
    • The console is powered on.
    • The grandmaster is set to 100% (otherwise channel intensities may be reduced).

    2. Patching Lights

To patch lights (dimmers to channels):

    • Press the [Patch] key on the top row of the keypad.
    • To patch a dimmer:
      • Press [DIM], enter the dimmer number, then [ENTER], and enter the desired channel number.
      • The console should auto-select the correct unit (Dimmer/Channel).
    • To unpatch:
      • Press [DIM], enter the dimmer number, then press [S6] (Unpatch).
    • You cannot patch a dimmer into more than one channel, but you can use submasters or groups to achieve similar effects.

For moving lights, use the Fixture Patch display:

    • Access via [S8] in the Patch display or option 2 in the Moving Light Functions menu.
    • Enter fixture number, personality, start channel, DMX port/address, and other attributes.
    • Use Swap Focus or Flip to adjust pan/tilt behavior if needed.

    3. Recording a Follow/Hang Cue

While there’s no dedicated “Follow” or “Hang” button, you can simulate these behaviors using cue timing:

    • After setting your lighting look, press [Record], enter the cue number, and press [Enter].
    • To add follow/hang timing:
      • Press [Time] to access fade and delay properties.
      • Set:
        • Fade Up Time: how long it takes to fade in.
        • Fade Down Time: how long it takes to fade out.
        • Delay Up/Down Time: how long to wait before starting the fade.
    • For a follow cue, set a Delay Up Time for the next cue.
    • For a hang cue, set a Delay Down Time or use a long fade time to simulate a pause.

You can also use cue lists to sequence multiple cues:

    • Press [Lists] to open the Cue List Directory.
    • Press [New] to create a new list.
    • Record cues into the list with desired timing.
    • Use [Go] to run through the cues in order.
