SmartFadeML control API?

Hi folks,

Been quite awhile since posting, just getting back into learning our church's SmartFadeML as we have trouble getting anyone to learn lighting (I'm the volunteer Tech Director but primarily sound and video).

We just got MediaShout, which allows at least MIDI based remote control, so we'd like to control our SmartFadeML with MediaShout cues, which I have actually found some info on. However, we currently have the SmartFadeML connected to our projection PC via USB to use the SmartSoft program, and I was wondering if there is any documentation anywhere on controlling SmartFade from another program on the same PC.

One of our volunteers is a Linux programmer, and somewhat knowledgeable on Windows programming and interactions, so I'm looking for information on APIs, internal PC program to program control, etc.

Thanks,
Jeff

  • You can use MIDI from a suitable program either on the same PC running Smartsoft or from another PC but you will need an external MIDI interface to connect to the SFML - This could be a cheap USB 1x1 MIDI interface such as this: http://www.rolandus.com/products/details/1157

MIDI messages can control Memory faders, Mem Pages, Live and Next Crossfaders, Main Master, Bump master, Bumps 1-48. GO,Pause, Goto step, Blackout etc - These are documented in the SFML manual from pages 29 -31

Programming will need to be done on the SFML with the MIDI messages able to recall any memory or stack step etc. A dual monitor setup would be a good idea if using Smartsoft on the same PC!

Just as a side note: I have used MIDI over wi'fi on an iphone/ iPad using custom TouchOSC templates I made - great if you want wireless control of your SFML. This is very useful for single person focusing etc.  See here: http://community.etcconnect.com/wikis/products/smartfade-touchosc-layouts.aspx   This requires a wireless router, and a PC with a 1x1 MIDI connection to the SmartfadeML.

    Cheers

  • Hi Richard,

Thanks for the reply. That's the information that I've found so far, and I already have MIDI interfaces if we go that route. We already run video and audio via computer interfaces and MIDI control, so we're pretty familiar with computer control.

What I'm looking for is any information on controlling the SmartSoft program itself from another program via API, as we already have that set up to control our SmartFadeML.

    Thanks,

    Jeff
