Control SmartFade ML with MIDI from Ableton Live?

My church has the SmartFade ML and we are trying to have the lights change with music. I saw the two MIDI ports and have seen some people on YouTube do this. I bought this USB MIDI Interface, plugged it into our iMac and set it up. I set up a placeholder stack on the board. I fired up Ableton and tried to output MIDI note 125 and nothing happened. I switched the two MIDI cables and no dice. I then tried QLab and Bome's MIDI Translator, neither of which worked. I'm not sure what I'm missing if anything. I did read somewhere that s specific update to the board broke the MIDI functionally and has since been fixed. I'm not sure which version out board is on but I'll find out. Am I missing something or should a software update fix it?

  • The MIDI protocol includes several different sets of functionality. It important to check which type of MIDI functions a given device needs.

SmartFade ML supports four parts of MIDI to offer MIDI control of the various console functions:

    • MIDI Show Control
      • "Stack" playback control (GO, GOTO CUE etc)
    • MIDI Controllers
      • Moves Faders
    • MIDI Program Change
      • 'Special' functions including alternate GO
    • MIDI Notes
      • MEMs Bump Buttons

    In your case:

MIDI Note 125 does nothing at all.
    "GO" is Program Change 125.

See the "MIDI Setup" chapter of the console manual for details.
