I'm not sure what you are seeing. This is what I see for the difference between an unread post and an unread pinned posts (from Cobalt 7.3.1 Open Beta):

Is it possible that the background is just not a large enough difference? (If so, we can look at changing that.)

now that i know it's there i can see it. but to me the difference is to small by far. don't want to mess up the whole coloring scheme, but if you can make the grey darker that would help me a lot.
is it only me and my displays?

This should be better now. Slightly darker and new icon (for full size columns).
