I agree with MJ that SDI would be great on the Axon. That way it's all one type of signal going wherever it needs to go.
Also...along the lines of what Marty said...you typically have a few more feeds other than the DL2's, so something in line with the 6 or 8 ins would be very nice. As far as fading goes....while yes it is nice, you can always use the layer intensity to fade accordingly if it's the trade off of SDI vs. S-Video. You can always grab one of Doug's DMX-RS232 boxes and get going in a pinch.
