Is the DL.2 my solution?

Hey everyone,

Hoping you could help me think something through. I have a client that wants to use a stock piece they have in their warehouse. It's a 7' wide x 30' tall screen. They plan to use it to scroll names throughout an awards ceremony (picture the opening to StarWars). The client intends to supply a single powerpoint presentation with the scrolling content.

I was hoping to use three DL.2's stacked to accomplish this using the collage generator? Each projector would be responsible for a projection area of about 7' X 10' to fill the 30' screen. I figure this is a little closer to a true 4:3 aspect ratio.

Anyway, do I have any chance in this working or should I go another route?

Thanks for looking!

  • Hi Dave,

Without getting into calculations for the image sizes just yet, one issue that you'll need to think about is the power point presentation. The DL fixtures were never really meant to show power point presentations, so there's not really a clean way of doing it.

About your only two options are to either use the VGA in on the side of the fixtures, or the Svideo/SDI capture to feed a computer running the power point presentation into the DL fixtures.

The problem with using the VGA-in is that it totally bypasses the media server of the DL, meaning you won't be able to collage multiple units. If you use the Svideo capture, which does run through the media server so collaging is possible, the quality of the video will be degraded as the Svideo capture resolution isn't all that stellar. The SDI would be the best option, but you would have to figure out a way to convert the output of a computer running the power point to SDI, and split it three ways to get it to all three DLs to make the collage possible.

Instead of using the power point, could the client create movie clips instead? A movie clip could be created for each award and used to scroll the names at the appropriate time.

Just some things to think about. As far as the image size calculations, do you know what your throw distance is going to be from DL to screen?

    Thanks,
