I have used a file that was 1440x1024. However, there were some downfalls.
If you run a single layer, you'll be ok (not the greatest performance, but that was expected). When we tried to run 3 layers of this size file, it choked big time (like I knew it would).
We had the files re-rendered at 1024x768 and the animation folks couldn't tell the difference. :-)
