Default Gateway

If I am using 10.101.101.101 for a CEM+ rack with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 what should I use for the default gateway?

  • Assuming you are on an unrouted network, you can use the IP address of the processor.

  • Thanks. Can you explain to me when it is appropriate to change the last octet vs. cases where you would want to match the first two octets and change the last two to ".1.1". I'm at the early stages of comprehending this and I'd love to understand the logic behind it if you don't mind going into a bit more depth.

  • The main reason for change is Windows 7 wont allow you to have a default gateway the same as your IP Address.

So on all equipment apart from Gio and EOS Ti you can use the same Gateway as your IP or on Gio or Ti use .1.1

The default gateway is used when a one bit of equipment is trying to send another bit of equipment some information but it cant. (Normally as its in another subnet) It will then send the information to the default gateway to deal with.

If you have a un-managed network and everything is in the same subnet then it wont matter if its set to the same as the IP or the .1.1 (unless Gio or Ti)

So if you don't have a Gio or Ti then stick with keeping it to the same as the IP address if you do you might want to switch it all to .1.1 so its them same throughout your site but it doesn't matter if you have a mix.
