Way off topic, but I am having a very hard time answering this...and since you'll are out in the field and see thing....
Does any one know of any theaters out there that are still running a hemp (sandbags, pin rail, etc) rigging system? This is for historical reasons, nothing to do with trying to upgrade etc.
I currently know of only 1 space (Academy of music in Northampton MA) that is still running - everywhere else I know has been upgraded...or closed down/stripped out.
Any ideas anyone?
The Paramount Theater in Austin TX is still a hemp house - over 100 years old and going strong. www.austintheatre.org.
There's a high school and a college with hemp lines in my town. IIRC the electrics are steel and counterweight but the curtains are hemp and sandbags. Details on request...
Thespian Hall in Booneville, MO (claims to be oldest continuous operating live house west of Mississippi - unverified) was as of October, but they were taking bids for upgrade. I think they were going to try to remain a hemp-style house, but just change to synthetic ropes; budgets and operations concerns may have changed that plan.
Came across mixed houses (counterweighed and hemp) on a tour in NZ 10 years ago. If it helps I could find out if they still are. But it looks like you have enough other examples?
The Booth Theater in NYC is still a hemp house I believe. It's a Shubert house on 45th and Broadway. The Cort may also be a hemp house but i'm not positive.
OK, I'm up to 12 sites: https://pelhamhs.ipower.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hemp_house_theatres Any more ideas? This is turning out to be harder than I thought Bruce
Still a few hemp linesets in three different venues I personally know of in Connecticut. One is venue is newly built (within 8 years), the other going strong about at about 50!
...and they are the (fill-in-the-name) theater in (sometown,CT)....? (you can't leave me hanging)
The Moore Theatre in Seattle, WA still has some hemp lines
Whoops- Sorry! Bradley Playhouse (Putnam, CT), The Katherine Hepburn Center (Old Saybrook, CT), and I think the Garde (New London, CT) has a couple still? - Definitely not their full rig though.
The Cape Playhouse (Dennis, MA) is a hemp house. Still very active!
The Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, Pa continually running since 1809. The 1894 Grand Opera House in Galveston, Tx.
The Virginia Stage Company, in the Wells Theater, in Norfolk, VA is still operating as a hemp house, other than the electrics which are on motorized winches. The theater was built in 1914 and has been run by VSC for the last 40 years.
Also, the Larcom Theater in Beverly, MA, although it's a very small set up (nine linesets?)
