Fixtures requiring different wave sizes in the same effect

Hi folks, this is kind of an involved question, so I'll describe the whole process I took.  My question is, basically, is there an easier way to do what I just did?

I had 3 fixtures that needed to do a pan chase, so I applied a linear pan effect.  Then it was requested that each fixture keep its offset position in the effect, but have a different size.  I allowed myself a moment to think of how easy that would be on a GrandMA (top the effect, then resize the pan wave for each fixture as needed), and then made 3 copies of the pan effect with different sizes.

I changed each effect from Grouping Spread to Grouping 1, then changed the Trail of each one to 33, 66, and 99.  In programming, this made the look I expected, but when I played the cue back, the units were no longer offset - all of them were hitting the left and right stops at the same time.

I then created 6 phantom fixtures and added 2 of them to each of the effects, and changed the grouping to spread and the trail to even.  By selecting the units in the right order, I forced the "real" units into their proper places in the look, and all was well.

There has to be an easier way - please tell me what it is!

  • The feature that you are looking for is a channel level override of certain properties of the effect.   After 2.0 releases, we will start on an overhaul of the effects package. This will be included at that time.   The only (perhaps) easier way to have accomplished this at the moment would have been through three effects.   This is very high on the list of issues to address.

    Thanks much!

  • Thanks for your response, Anne.

I did use 3 separate effects, but it still didn't work without the phantom units.  Even when I set the effects to Grouping 1 with a trail of 33 for the first effect, 66 for the second effect, and 99 for the third effect, they still didn't offset the way I needed - they all hit the left and right stops together..  Is there a way to specify that offset, or did I really need the phantom fixtures?

Had I been thinking about this harder, I would have stored the endpoints of the pan moves to 2 focus positions, and made an absolute effect out of those. After using the Hog / MA desks for so long, I tend to forget about the other ways step and absolute effects can work.

I'm glad to hear this won't be a problem for much longer.  I'm also looking forward to the customizable encoder pages I've heard are coming.

Many thanks for all your help and support!
