iRFR and wifi settings

I am trying to figure out the best and most reliable setup for my wifi access points in my network. I am using 2 apple airport express gen 2. I am trying to figure out the best setting. The area I am at has a lot of wireless transmissions mostly all on the 2.4 ghz. It seems that my wifi is very choppy and not reliable at all. I'm trying to get others opinions on how to build my network to be more reliable. Also, anyone having issues with iOS 6 and using a static ip. I've noticed that my wifi signal icon does not show up if I'm in a static setting.

  • JBG,

It sounds like you can get connected in the past but then lose the connection. Is this correct? Have you set the system up and had it working? Do you have access to a program that will look at all of the wireless access points in range of your location? Access points have a variety of "Channels" in the 2.4khz band to work with. Typically 3, 6 and 11.  Most come defaulted to a channel.  If you have multiple systems from a variety of nearby businesses or city wide access points, you my have a lot of units competing for the space on the same channel. Even if the addressing schemes are different, the level of signal might cause intermittant connection issues. Switching the channel of your access points might help. The programs like Netstumbler can help identify if this is a problem. I have seen sites that during commissioning were fine when only the lighting system was online, but then started having issues as more and more systems were brought online using wifi access.  Lighting, rigging, audio, even cash registers at concessions stands would pile on. Suddenly you have a everyone tryign to talk on the same channel at the same time and depending on where you are in your space, other systems my be drowning out your connection.   Can't say this is the issue, but it bears looking into if you are having intermittant  problems.

  • Greg,

I work in film and tv business and between the broadcasts that camera a d sound departments have my connection becomes choppy and lags. When those department are off stage it becomes better. I haven't done a scan but I have tried to set up my network on 5 ghz only and hide the network but keep it open so the encryption wall doesn't slowit down. It seems either the AP is not changing to 5 ghz only or it doesn't help.

  • I've found that the sound department's wireless works more in the 5ghz range than the 2.4 ghz range.  I use a similar system, and although I do have the too many wifi in the same space on stage, I generally have better luck avoiding 5ghz since the sound guys have more powerful transmitters that can cause critical interferance with your signal.

Either way, Ive had similar issues, with my AP network on stage.  My disconnect issues tend to be a little better when using static IP addresses rather than using DHCP.

MY iPad is set t 10.101.125.101

    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

On the Router I have it set to Bridge mode with a static IP.

On the router I use the following settings:

    IP Adress 10.101.124.101

    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

    Router Address: 10.101.1.1

I still get the occasional disconnect but it hasn't been too bad.

    Hope that helps
