VNC support for the ion

Another crazy idea of mine here.

what if the ION could support a VNC server so we could use a tablet as a touch screen, this would be nice for magic sheets.

  • You could set up a VNC server on a Mac or PC client pretty easily. I would be very surprised if ETC installed it on a console.
  • Kicking myself for not thinking to try this sooner, I just set this up with an iPad running Screens and the OLE running on my Mac. My first impression is "Very nice if you need/want it."

With my Airport Express and current network settings, I get a refresh of maybe 3 fps (@ 2560x1440 with low color depth) on my iPad, which is more than enough for most of my purposes.  Using the moving light controls was a little clunky during my test, though they would probably be less so with a reduced resolution on the host (assuming your VNC client doesn't have an FPS cap).

So it seems to me if portable magic sheets and the ability to more easily update moving light presets from the stage are things you would like to do, this setup is the way to go for now; for anything else, unless you are already running a PC/Mac as a client, I don't think the cost of a tablet, computer, and a dongle is justified.
