Multiple effects on one channel or channel group

How can I apply multiple effects to the same parameters of a single group of channels?  I have a group of LEDs, and would like to have them running a simple red to blue chase at 50%, and then have them snapping to full and white randomly.  Both effects work fine independently, but they don't work together - the color part of the snap to white effect stomps the red/blue.

I tried writing another list which had 2 cues that looped, creating the color roll, and then applying the effect in those cues, which resulted in the intensity bump showing, but not the color bump.  The snap to white effect has 2 steps - a preset that takes the units to full and white, and a "background" step.

I also tried putting the effects in 2 separate subs and giving the pop to white a higher priority, and it didn't work that way.  On the MA1, I would have created a topped effect in the main cuelist, then run a chaser in a separate, non-tracking cuelist with a higher priority.  I considered trying something like this, but couldn't find a way to make an EOS cuelist non-tracking.

Anyone have any thoughts?  I don't want to have to say "it just can't do that".

  • Currently - it just "wont" do that.  At least not in the ways that seem most direct.

    Things I would try

Pixel Maps - it's a bit of work.  But drop a few of your lights in a pixel map and see if you can use the Effects Layer to generate the Blue/Red Chase.  Then apply the White effect on top.  I think that will work - but R/B might need to be custom content.  There is no real interaction between the pixel maps and the channel selection - so the desk just outputs everything HTP - and it's a good back door to overlapping color effects.

The other thing you can do if you really want to is patch the LEDs as 3 part intensity fixtures (I know I know) - but INT effects are overlappable with certain constraints.  Your best outcome will be to put the 2 effects in subs and make sure the White/Ran effect has a similar or higher frequency that the Red/Blue roll.  Right now if you want to apply a high frequency INT effect on top of a lower frequency effect it works pretty well.  If you have a high frequency shimmer type effect and try to roll a slow moving gradient across it - the outcome is no bueno.

Hope that is vaguely helpful.  Good luck

  • Thanks Patrick.  The fast shimmer effect is exactly what I was talking about.

We already have a pixel map in the show for an upstage wall of what looks like candles until we start running effects on them, so I already have a bunch of extra content loaded for that.  I made a second map, and found, as you suggested, that I could run a red & blue effect on one of the layers or in an effect layer, and then add the shimmer effect to the channels, and get exactly what I wanted.

I love that I can crossfade between the server and the channels, but it hadn't occurred to me to use both at the same time - yet another layer of what can be done with the system.  Henceforth, I'll start making maps for any setups like this, just in case, even if we don't plan to use any media elements with them.
