DMX

My school has an ION but up to this point I have only had regular lighting instruments all patched one to one. I recently purchased some Elation Quad Pars. I had to buy a wireless receiver and transmitter since our electrics do not have any DMX outlets. I have everything hooked up but am at a stand still since I don't know how to gain control of the quads on the ION. I looked through the manual expecting some clear instructions. I didn't find clear instructions. Is there a simple series of steps that a beginner like myself can go through to make sense of this? If so please advise. I would like to do it myself without having someone come out at a fee.

  • ok, i'll do my best and try to answer some basic stuff. try that and then come back with more questions. it's quite a big field you're venturing into that's why we can't cover all of it from quite a basic question.

    first of all: make sure you're having a recent software running on your ion. right now 2.0.1 is the newest available one. the newest version of the manual is 2.0 and can be found here: http://www.etcconnect.com/docs/docs_downloads/manuals/Ion_v2.0.0_Operations_Manual_RevA.pdf (to find out which software is loaded on your Ion, with an empty command line press [About]. it should read 2.0 or 2.0.1 (those are fairly recent ones) or maybe 1.9.12 (which is a year old and is missing some cool features).

    what you're looking for is covered in the manual, starting at page 75.

    go to patch: [Display]{Patch}
    select the new channel number to which your LED should listen to, let's say 101: 101 [Enter]
    click {Type}, then {Manfctr}, then {>>} until you see Elation, click that.
    click {>>} once, you will see "Opti Quad Par" in blue writing. click that.
    you see tiles for M1 through M6. those are the different modes your LED can work in. which one you choose is up to you, all of them have advantages and disadvantages. for more detail check the manual: http://www.elationlighting.com/pdffiles/opti-quad-par.pdf
    set the correct mode at the fixture itself and choose the same mode on your Ion by clicking the respective tile.

    now you need to set an address, depending if you hooked the wireless transmitter to dmx-port 2 on your console or daisy-chained it somewhere onto port 1 and which dmx-addresses are still empty in your system. as examples let's say we use port 1 and address 49 (after your 48? dimmer channels) or we use port 2 and can use address 1 because nothing else is on the line.
    set this address on your fixture (just the address, not the port number).
    on your Ion you are still in patch and chan 101 is still selected. press [At] [4][9][Enter] (or [At][2][/][1][Enter]

    press [Live]

    you patched channel 101 as Elation Opti Quad Par in Mode x to address y.

    i suggest you do that and then come back, tell us if you succeeded or if (and where) you failed, and what you need to know next.
