Why someone swapped them over though is beyond me!

Yes, it is possible. You will feel like you're going to break something in the process -- they have high retention. Check out this keycap upgrade kit guide, which should help. 5148.Gio Keycap Upgrade Kit - 1.9.11.pdf
Note that there is one additional step not included (as the replacement keycaps already had this done) -- when you have removed the white plunger, reseat it in the keycap, THEN firmly push it back into the keyboard. If you don't do that, it will sit a bit higher than the rest of the keys on the keyboard.
Can you send me the serial number of the console in an email to hh <at> etcconnect <dot> com? Was this a new console?
