Magic Sheets - linking data

I am confused about how to create "buttons" in the magic sheet that directly link to the data that the buttons are supposed to represent. I have watched several videos and read the manual thoroughly but this topic does not seem to be addressed.

I have created a nice looking magic sheet. In the demo video that a use made, if he clicked on a button that says "Channel 5" Then the input in the command line would then say channel 5 and give him control of the channel. However, when I do it, I get "Channel - syntax error"

Please help!!

  • When you click the symbol, are you in Live? Or in one of the various Blind modes? If you post the showfile with the Magic Sheet, I will take a look

  • The "Object", a button in this instance, needs to be linked to a function, such as "Channel XX".

In Edit mode, click on the button.  In the edit window, below the object choices, you will see Color, then Font, then Target.  In the box below that click the down arrow and you can select from a list and you need to select Channel.  Then in the smaller Target box below that you select which channel number.

For fast assignment of boxes, highlight all appropriate buttons and make them Channels with no target number,  Then in the upper section of the edit window (Layout Toolbar), you will see a white arrow.  Click on that.  You now get 3 choices, choose the one with a number and hand symbol, this is the Quick Number tool.  You choose to quick number Channels, then give it a starting number and press OK.  Then do a single mouse button press on each box to sequentially assign channel numbers.

  • O.K., I have done all of that and this is how I get to this syntax error.

  • When I go into the editing mode, it automatically puts me in BLIND

  • I downloaded and was able to open in the OLE your "House" .esf file.

When I click on a fixture symbol, 605 as example, I can successfully drive that channel to full.

The rectangle symbols on 4 Electric that I assume are cyc units have no targets assigned, those do not respond to any command.

Likewise, the red rectangle labeled Bronco's Gobo has no target assigned (The fixture symbol on the position does). When I edit the red symbol and give it a Channel target of 15, pressing that rectangle places channel 15 on the command line. If you wanted that button to drive Ch 15 to full, you could record a macro that sends Ch 15 at full, then assign that macro to that button, though I would do 2 buttons, one for an On state and one Off (separate macro's)

If you desire a button to act upon a range of channels, the target for the button is either going to have to be a submaster or a group (or a similarly acting target).  I was able to make a new Group (1) that has channels 602 thru 613 in it.  I then edited the Par symbol for 601-613 to be Group 1 and the symbol will now grab those channels when pressed.

Is this some of the issues you are running into ?.

And, yes, going into edit mode puts you in Blind.  Normal behavior AFAIK.

  • O.K., I see part of the issue . When I go into the editing mode, it automatically puts the system into blind mode. If I go change it back to live, it will allow me to grab a channel. However, I am not able assign parameters to the graphic symbols that I made myself. It only allows me to assign values to the pre-made symbols.

Corrrect.  MS is pretty much a CAD program in Edit but a console in live.  So you manipulate the "drawing" while in edit, but operate the console when not in edit.

"However, I am not able assign parameters to the graphic symbols that I made myself. It only allows me to assign values to the pre-made symbols."

Maybe elaborate a bit on which symbols and what you want them to do.  I could manipulate about any symbol on that MS to respond to target info. but I'm not really sure what your end goal is for which symbol.
