ETC ION programming movers help

Hey there!

My name is Liam and I have a musical programming gig coming up with the ION. I've used it in the past and I'm comfortable with all the basics and terminology, but I have a few questions that weren't quite covered in the training videos.

My first is say, I have 8 movers in my rig and I want to have them all moving slowly at different pan/tilts in time with a song. Do I need to program an effect on each individual unit and assign them to the cue needed? Or is it easier to program a whole bunch of follow cues and loop them?

Secondly, say we've got the answer to the first question. How would I then be able to insert another cue without disrupting the previous loop? Example: All 8 movers are slowly moving about and suddenly the song calls for blinders to be activated without impacting the movement of the movers. Essentially, how can I program a cue to go without impacting a current cue or part cues?

Any help would be appreciated!

  •   I think effects would be your friend here.  I have a similiar set of actions that I use alot live with IM or FX subs.  I'm not at my board, but I used the given effects (in the 900s) and copied a circle effect into effect palette one and labelled it big slow circle.  Then I ran it and modified it for scale and cycle time and with I think a grouping that is spread then a trail that is even, all the movers do a slow wander in a circle, with different paths as their starting position is different and all start their circle at a different time. 

      When you're writing your cue, lets say cue one your movers are on but static.  In cue 2, since you have the effect, all you'd have to do is choose their channels, effect one enter.  They will start their slow wander.  Regardless of what you add in cue 3, your movers will keep moving until you tell them to stop referencing the effect.  To stop them, I believe you press and hold the fader control button which brings up a stop effect soft key - that will stop the effect, then either take out the intensity and/or put them where you need them next, and record the next cue with them no longer in effect 1.  I think effects links show up at the far right of the playback screen.  Then if you need them to do the same thing later, you already have that effect ready to go instead of writing a ton of follows.

     Copying and modifying the given stock effects has saved me much time and grey hair.  Can Can is another one that I've played with alot.

  • So simply put, I think that if you want the easiest way to deal with it, I usually go with separate effects So simply put, I think that if you want the easiest way to deal with it, I usually go with separate effects running simultaneously to make updating an individual instrument easier. So option a. However, you could write a bunch of presets or pallets and write one absolute effect that recalls those in an order that you want. I suggest against using a loop cue unless you want to run multiple cue lists. If you are running an effect all you have to do is make the changes you want and record a new cue. The eos family isn't like the previous etc consoles, you can run effects within cues and keep changing the look while keeping the effects running on their channels. However, if you are not sure which cue you will run while the effects are running, I would definitely suggest multiple cue lists with the effects running on a second cue list or an Effect sub.
