Elliott, While the Ion is a fine console, might I suggest that as "a student who is trying to get into theatrical lighting design" your moneys would be better spent buying a visualizer (WYSIWYG, ESP VISION, Capture Polar, and the like)? All console manufacturers offer a free offline software version, so you're not tied to just one. Very few designers own their own consoles. Depend on the venue/theatre to supply the lighting desk. "Dance with the girl that brung you."
