ION no fog

Dress rehearsal 2day & opening show Tues - going nuts. They added fog. Set my Stage Fogger to address 47. DMX connected to univ 1, patched 47 @ 47. Keypad 47 enter. Roll wheel no output. Tried a few addresses. Tried other univ. Swapped cables. Tried dimmer, generic fog, generic haze. Ckd & dbl ckd settings. Nothing. Fogger works with its remote.

Aaaaarg. HELP!

  • Have you patched the fogger as a fogger? If so, the Ion probably isn't looking at it's output as an intensity (which is what the wheel affects, I think) but as another non-intensity parameter like image or beam, maybe, depending on the profile. See how the encoders are labelled, when you tag the various parameters.

Another thing to maybe look at - if you're running straight DMX, with no profile loaded - is how many channels the fogger uses - it could be the first channel is something like fan speed, not output. Not familiar with your particular fogger.

All that being said, I'm having similar difficulties getting my DMX-ready hazer to run with its profile on our Ion - I know it's very likely operator error, as it works fine on our other console. I just haven't asked it to haze the way it wants ...yet. But those would be the first few things I'd try.

  • Tried dimmer, fog and haze - all generic. It's a single channel fogger - Ultratec Stage Fogger.

  • According to the UltraTec manual, it lists three DMX channels - the first is output, the second is LSG (external chiller unit maybe?), and the third is "Optional Air"  (Also ?) - but I don't see any way to plug these units in... Unrevised manual? My misinterpretation? Either way, try sending values to those two channels, and see if that does anything.

The back of the unit seems to have a "Valid DMX"  LED - with the remote unplugged but DMX in, you should see this on, solid or flashing quickly, when the unit is ready to go, slowly when it's heating. As Glenn suggested, maybe try turning it off and on any time after resetting the DMX addressing. If the unit's seeing valid data, it should be working as you have it.
