Ion Encoders Plus Shift? Why?

Just upgraded to the latest version of the software and suddenly I have lost control of my encoders. Support tells me that this is a new feature. Hold down shift to get fine control! Yay! Having to hold down Shift to get fine control of the encoders is a royal PITA! I don't know about anyone else who uses the Ion, but I almost NEVER use just one hand to operate the encoders! I use one hand for pan and the other for tilt AT THE SAME TIME!

This change in the Ion Software also breaks my encoders for use with my media server. Where before one click on the encoder would increment me 1 file or one folder, now one click increments me 4+ folders or files. To increment my folders and files like I used to  I have to press the shift key with a free hand that I don't really have, because it is normally working with the other hand manipulating the encoders.

So now my movers are swinging all the way off stage when I move the encoder a slight bit, and to get fine control I can now only control one parameter at a time. Please make this "feature" go away, or at least provide us with a toggle so that it can be on or off.

  • This was quite carefully thought about before it was introduced and indeed was added as an option for a very long time before it became standard. The default change happened because it was felt that a consistent experience across devices was the best route to go down. I think you'll find you'll get used to it very quickly.

Out of interest how often do you need fine control of more than one parameter at a time? By the very fact that you're moving both you can't really be controlling things in a fine manner?! Another advantage of the new behaviour is that you can start to move a unit in course mode and then when you're nearing the position simply hold down shift to go into fine mode. You also always know what mode the encoders are in without looking.

Spend some time using it and I have a hunch you'll come to prefer it over time. Change can sometimes be hard but often it's for the better!

  • Dan,

As it stands now, if I move the encoders a half turn I get my movers moving completely off the stage. Before the change I was able to have excellent control of my movers and had no difficulty getting the movers right where I needed them. The control afforded by how the encoders previously behaved allowed excellent control on my small stage, and even allowed me to use Pan and Tilt at the same time to follow performers onstage while busking better than I could with a trackball.

The biggest issue is with control of my Media Server. Having to hold down the shift key is a problem (especially if my finger slips off the shift key while scrolling though files as all of a sudden instead of being in Folder 10 I end up in folder 15.456 and then I have to go all the way back to Folder 0 to get the encoder tracking properly again. And as I am left-handed, now I find my hands working at crossed purposes so that my right hand can hold the shift key down and my left hand controls the encoder. I find it awkward in the extreme.

Any feature requiring the use of two hands at once on a console is an issue. Sure, I'll get used to it, but I will never like it.

  • Sure, I appreciate that. If it's moving that far then it sounds like your settings are incorrect. In Setup > Desk > Face Panel you can set the percent per revolution and degrees per revolution which your enocders use in course mode. That will resolve the issue with Pan/Tilt etc.

As far as the media server goes, I think that is a know issue or at least it seems familiar. It could well be on the list to be sorted.

    Cheers
