Update or Record Only

Despite working on an Ion for over two years.  I'm very much stuck with some old programming habits with express.  I always used record, but now record only and update are available.   Most of my shows are busked live.  But two or three shows a year require a great deal of programming.  This weeks show is just under 1000 cues over two 6 hour days.  After learning about update (which I think was available on express, been to many years to remember now), i've been using update to modify cues.  Apparently, if I load a color palette on some fixtures, and then slightly change the color, then Update Enter, the default is to overwrite the color palette.

Is it better to get into the habit of using Record Only more often when this situation should arise?  Is Update {Make Absolute} a good solution to my problem?  Can the Update behavior be changed via a setting to modify the default to NOT update palettes?

In a separate scenario.  My Ion is run in Cue Only, another behavior I became accustomed to with Express.  Can Auto Block be turned off in 2.0.1?  It doesn't seem to be a setting I can find anywhere.  But I do remember being able to turn it off in 1.9.

Thanks,

Harley

  • ok, the simple one first: there is no (and there never was a) way to turn auto-block off. it's embedded to deep into the system. but the system helps you cleaning it up: Cue 1 / {AutoblkCleanup=softkey6} Enter Enter. this function was introduced in 2.0.1. from live you can cleanup a whole cuelist and from the Cue List display (Cue Cue) you can also clean up single cues.

update vs. record only. rather think of record only as an alternative to record because with record only you can create new record targets (like Record) which update can't.

update is, as they say, very much a three step process: press Update, look at the CIA and understand what will happen, press Enter. in the CIA you get a list of all the changes. if it lists there a color palette then this will be updated as well. on the right hand side of the CIA's update display you find modifier buttons, there you can decide what will happen to references (i.e. palettes or presets). the options basically are: update the changes into the palette or lose the reference and record absolute values into the cue.

if you want to ignore all non-intensity parameters or certain channels while updating, you can do this before starting Update: (Channel list) [Update] or (Parameter) [Update] or (Channel list)(Parameter) [Update]

you can change the default behaviour of your Update process in Setup > Desk > Record Defaults.
