Effect values from effect sub not recording into Qs

Hi guys, I'm trying to record a show off subs (dance show) and I've got a circle effect on a sub, but when I record it into a cue, the size and rate of the effect are not what I specified in the sub, it's just the size and rate specified in the effect itself. Secondly, the effect continues to run when the sub is down after it's been recorded but I have auto playback disabled? Once recorded into a cue, I bring down the fader and press the bump to stop, yet the effect is still running. I am able to stop the effect with [Stop Effect] or @ [Enter]. Any thoughts on these two issues? Thanks.

  • Do you have the effect recorded into the next cue as well?

I would do a STOP EFFECT in the next cue and update it, if you haven't already.  That should stop it.

As for the size and rate- have you tried editing these live by hitting [Effect] while the effect is running?

    Thank you,

    Sasha Aranow

  • I am able to edit the cue in live to make it what I want, the problem is that what I am seeing onstage is not recording into my cues! When busking and programming, I haven't got time to go back and edit cues, especially when a lot of my effects are massively bigger than what I wanted to record into the cue!

  • ETC may correct me if I'm wrong, but if you are running the sub effect with the effect set to "Fade by Rate" (it's in the effect attributes), then the sub fader sets the manual step time and is over-riding the step/dwell and other timing as established in the effect.

  • As you have found there is some ambiguity when moving/copying/recalling effect overrides from cues to cues, subs to cues, etc.

These things are on the radar.  You'll find some incremental progress in 2.2 and hopefully the bulk of these workflow issues will be ironed out in 2.3

To be clear - you are just building a look via subs and then hitting [Record] Cue 1  - and expecting the desk to recreate that look the next time cue 1 is played back?

Yes Patrick, am I barking up the wrong tree?

  • No - I don't think you are barking up the wrong tree.    Lighting desks are built around the concept that when you hit "Record" it takes an accurate picture of what is currently being output and then when you recall that Q later we accurately reconstruct the look.

At the moment that doesn't always happen with effects and their overrides - depending on their source and a few other things.

As I mentioned - there is some incremental change in 2.2 (mainly moving cues with effects around in a Q list and having the overrides spontaneously combust into other values)

2.3 involves a rework of the entire effect override landscape and making these values behave more like other forms of data with respect to Record, Copy, Move, Make Manual, Block, etc. is a big part of my agenda.

  • Ok I understand Patrick, the annoying thing is I have had it all working fine before! I'd hit record, and the cue I recorded would have the correct effect values, and in the EXT Links column, it would say eg. E23* to show the discrete values in effect 23.

  • I'm a little curious about the working before part.   Are you working in the release of 2.1 at the moment?

Could you say for sure that the same effects in the same sub types were recording correctly in build X but not now in the build you are on?

  • Yes we are on 2.1, Not sure what release we were on when I last worked this way, but I'm adamant that programming from subs worked how I wanted it to.

Is it possible for someone else to record an effect sub and try and record a cue from it to see if it's the console or if it is just me? (I strongly suspect its me!)

  • So I just tried it.  And you're right - it seems to be you :-)

Built a quick Step FX and Relative FX

Choose Fade By Rate on one and Fade by Size on the other.

Made my Effect Subs and was able to use the Record command to put those levels in a Q.

A couple things : I'm using 2.2 so it's possible there is a 2.1 bug in there somewhere.

Make Manual doesn't grab any effect information so you can only use the Record command in this instance.

There were some issues in 2.1 and earlier with Effect overrides tracking through if you had multiple Q's with the same effects, but different overrides and were moving/copying them around.   It's worth looking to see if you have the same effect numbers in multiple Qs

If you have more than one instance of an effect playing in multiple Effect subs - it will combine all the channel numbers together and assign the highest override values to that effect when you record it into a Q.  Perhaps this is an issue?

  • I just tried this out and its a defect in 2.1, but it is fixed in 2.2 (not yet released). If you record a cue with an effect running on a sub, the subs effect overrides are not recorded into the cue. Recording a sub does record the cue's effect overrides though.

    Fixed in 2.2.

  • Patrick says its me, Dan says its 2.1!! I guess I'll just have to wait until 2.2 comes out. Any little inkling as to when? Weeks, months etc?

  • well patrick actually said that he was testing in 2.2 and that it could be a defect in 2.1 ;)

anne just wrote on facebook that it will be released on june 12 and posted to the download section the following monday.
