RF controller not staying connected

Hey friends, sorry if this isn't the correct place to post this question, I'm new here. 
 So I've inherited the board operator position on the show I'm on, first time working with the ion board, or a board that uses a network and remotes (yaay...). I've had pretty good luck being able to search up solutions to my problems but this one is stumping me. 
 
 The gaffer on this show uses his iPad mostly to connect to the board but when he forgets it or for whatever reason it doesn't connect he asks me to bring in the RF remote. As far as I know this thing has never worked, when it turns on it says connecting to USB, if you plug it into the USB it does connect after a bit, but as soon as you unplug it, it looses connection again. I do have RFR enabled in desk settings, and like I said, not much help has come from the Google search. Anyone have any tips or ideas?

The handset has been configured to use the USB connection on the top of the handset - this is called "Direct USB" connection mode. 
 Hold the [.] button while turning on the handset to get the list of available connections. 
 
 If the RFR Base station is connected to the console via USB, choose " Base USB ". 
 If the RFR Base station is connected to the console via Ethernet, it will list the available consoles by name for you to select the console. 
 
 These options are only shown if the RFR Handset is able to communicate with the Base and can find a Console, so ensure they powered up, within range, and the Handset's Frequency or Group matches your RFR Base station. If it cannot communicate with the Base then "Direct USB" will be the only listed option. 
 The connection setting is stored in the handset and will remain until manually changed using [.]

 PS: Only the [.] key can change connection settings, it does not matter what was used to charge - though it'll charge a little faster from a dedicated charger.
