Then what is the purpose of the custom button on the encoder select keypad?

To do what you want but the feature hasn't been added yet.

At the moment it's just the holding place for Intensity. Also Shift+Custom is a short cut to placing Intensity on the command line.

If it makes you feel any better there's a [Path] & Playback [Filter] Button on Eos, Gio & Ti that doesn't do anything yet.

not to mention the [Spread] and the [Time Template] buttons ;)

We're very lucky to have the team we've got. New developers aren't going to be reworking encoder controls straight off.

So as of v2.3.3 we can have six color pickers but can't put all four varilite shutters on one knob, like I could do with the strand 530.

Well the six colour pickers are in a display and were part of the 2.3 development, unfortunately Encoder Controls are still not top of the list of things to work on.

As Ueli said this is now possible with OSC on a tablet.

And you couldn't run all 4 shutters of a VL1000 or VL3500 on one page on a strand 500!

Sure I could. Since the strand had numeric (i.e. decimal point) fixture parameters, you just select them directly and the level wheel would move them. Now that's something you could use the custom wheel for (all explicitly selected parameters on a wheel).

Well with the Strand on a VL3500 or VL1000 you would need to select all 8 motors as point numbers to use them on the wheel.
Some new shutters controls maybe added in 2.4.

For the last 7-8 years I've used 2 macros to select Frame In and 2 macros for Frame Angle and I have my +% & -% set to 5%, this make setting shutters every quickly and saves a lot of encoder work.

Custom Encoder are still on the list but not in the 2.4

No problem, as the Strand had macros too.

So you have to double tap when the designer says "at fifty.....at sixty.....at seventy....at eighty.....". Does he spend more time with shutters or intensity levels?

ETC needs to come up with a macro keyword that will change the "%" value on the fly, as the current one is display context sensitive, and macros that change pages have become troublesome in this version. There are other 'Setup' commands that can be used in a macro when Live, like 'Show reference labels' and 'User Id'. So why not the '%' levels?

i prefer having my +% keys at 5%. if he asks for 50, 60, 70 i can do it, even if i have to press twice. if he asks for 55 i can get there with they keys set to 5, but couldn't with 10...
but that's not why i'm responding, just wanted to say that macros can change the value of the %/- % keys in setup. just tried it in nomad...
