Nomad settings

I know there must be posts about this already out there but searching I didn't find anything too soon.

I am trying to set up my Windows 7 (Dell Inspiration) laptop to run Nomad. I have a DMXking eDMX 4 rdm for the dmx. I don't know where to start for ip config on the laptop or on the eDMX device.

I did find one post speaking of a switch. Is a switch also required between the laptop and the DMX device?

I am also waiting a response from DMXking regarding how to configure the device.

Page 2-3 explain the IP settings of the eDMX4

set the IP address of the PC to match.

  • Thanks for the reply. I do have their manual however it says two things that hung me: 1) All eDMX4 units ship with default IP address settings. Please reconfigure for your requirements before use! 2) Before starting the eDMX Configuration utility please ensure your computer has appropriate IPv4 network settings, for example IP 192.168.0.100 Subnet 255.255.255.0 Gateway 192.168.0.254. So then once that all gets straightened out I still don’t know what to do with the NOMAD itself; ION settings in the software and if I need a switch or router.
  • This is where lighting merges with networking technology. Much of the network setup depends on how you have your system set up and what ip address range you have chosen for your system. If you use the suggested settings for the Eos family of systems then you need to set your eDMX to work with that.... unfortunately there is not one right answer here. Typically the Eos consoles live in the 10.101.90.xxx range but the Ion have their own suggested range. most devices expect there to be a switch between them and the console. If you provide info on how your laptop is set up for the lighting network then we can suggest ip addresses for the other devices.
  • Finally got my eDMX4 device working to output DMX to my fixtures. All along everything was good on the eDMX end. Turns out it wasn't working because the Nomad EOS default factory setting for sACN was for Draft Version (0.2) and it needed to be set at Release version. I had been told to leave everything set to factory and the only thing I needed to set was my LAN on my laptop but that's wasn't correct. Happy now it works and for those who are having the same issue that's possibly your same answer. The only thing I am disappointed with, and thinking about it harder I can see why; I think. I bought a 21.5" Dell T/S monitor so I could have non touch on my laptop for non essential windows and touch on the monitor for essential. Of course on a laptop there is only one VGA output so all it is really doing is extending the desktop and thus when I touched the screen it really was activating what was on the laptop screen and not the touch screen. Of course I moved the screens to the touch monitor that I wanted for touch activation but again, that does not work because the touch is actually activating the laptop screen items through it being extended. I can see it needs a second video card to physically separate the two screens. I shouda realized that. Duhh! Soooo I activated two screens in the Nomad settings and all that does is cut everything in half and won't allow enough room to see what is needed. Sooo I set it back to 1 screen and bottom line looks like the laptop gets set aside with the lid open enough to get to the keyboard and not shut off the laptop, and then use the touch screen for everything, tabbing to whatever single screen I want at a time.
  • this is either a windows setting gone wrong or a problem of the touch screen driver... this should work, at least on a somewhat recent laptop model

  • If you are saying it should work as two completely separate screens with t/s as the second then that's good news. I will re-explain how I have everything set up so it's clear. Dell Inspiron Windows 7 laptop running Nomad EOS. Dell 21.5" T/S running from VGA out of laptop into VGA into t/s. USB out of laptop into t/s for touch commands to work. T/S appears to run default installed as a Windows "duplicate" screen. I changed it in Windows "connect to a projector" as extension. Fire up Nomad and of course both the laptop and t/s screens show exactly the same thing when in "duplicate" but only the laptop shows Nomad log in screen when in extension and the t/s shows a generic windows screen. Good so far. So when Nomad is set up as 2 screens and I run EOS the laptop shows an EOS window with tabs and the t/s shows a different EOS window. I then used Tab and arrow key to move all Nomad windows into the t/s screen that I want there. I'll use the Magic Sheet as the example here. Using the laptop keyboard I type 21 thru 24 @@ and my 4 fixtures turn on full white. The command line shows 21 thru 24 @ Level with the diamond (completed) When I touch something on the t/s Magic Sheet I see it's action on lap top screen as what appears to be a water drop hitting the laptop screen and the command line changes from ch 21 through 24 @ Level(diamond) to ch 21 through 24 and whatever is on the laptop as the command (if it lines up with something in Nomad on the laptop) however not completed (diamond goes away) and the fixtures do not respond to what I touched. I type 21 thru 24 again and hit enter. Diamond comes back as completed command and the fixtures are still on full white. I touch red on the t/s. Fixtures do not turn red, laptop shows my touch (water drop hitting) in the same spot as where red is at on the t/s (which happens to be a blank square on the laptop window when the Browser is open) and again the completed icon (diamond) goes away. It appears it is actually just extending from the laptop screen so when I touch the t/s it's really the laptop that it's talking to. Wherever I touch on the t/s it physically activates whatever is at that spot on the laptop. There are only a few choices in projector set up; disconnect, extend, duplicate and projector only. I would think extend is correct. Do I need to call Dell?
  • i don't know neither this laptop model nor the screen but there must be either a dell or a windows configuration program to tell the system that the touches should be mapped to which screen. is this touchscreen Windows 7 compatible? what happens if you instead of duplicate use another option?
  • If I select disconnect then I lose the second screen completely. If I select duplicate then the second screen is just a mirror copy of the laptop. If I select projector only then I lose the laptop screen. There is a config utility that installed with the t/s however there is nothing anywhere in it that allows for any touching config. On the phone with Dell somewhere in the world. They say it's compatible with 7. Not sure if I will get very far with the answer. Will lyk.
  • Hey Jeff this is a windows issue--I had to do this for my computer at one point. The first thing I would try is downloading and installing any dell drivers. Next is in the windows screen utility change the settings for the external screen to act as primary.
  • Well hysterical. The technician, from whatever country, had a great sense of humor. She spent over an hour clicking, expanding, shrinking, setting; all telling me she really didn't know what to do exactly. During her stuff she did a setting that opened both my laptop and my t/s in a white screen and my laptop stated something to the effect if this is the touch screen then touch it. if it is not then hit enter to move it. I asked her if she wanted me to hit enter and she said no and continued with settings and opening and closing and pretty much everything I didn't know existed, including moving my main screen (windows icons) to the t/s and she was never able to get the t/s to act as the t/s. It always activated whatever position on the laptop I hit on the t/s. Sooooo I asked her to go back to that set up that made the screens white and she did. I asked her to read on the laptop what it said about if it is the t/s then tap it and if it is not then hit enter to move it. She did. I told her I thought I should hit enter to move it because it appeared the laptop didn't know which was which. She told me to go ahead and do that. When I did all the writing moved to the t/s/. When I touched the t/s everything reset and I exited that set up. Now it all works as it is supposed to. We talked and I explained to her what was going on and she thanked me for helping Dell. We laughed and now they work properly. Thanks also for your input. Had you not replied I would have still been using only one screen and tabs.
