Output options for Nomad

A small community theater I sometimes work for purchased Nomad 256 to replace its chauvet lighting console. What they didn't realize is that they need some sort of output to DMX.

Are there any low budget output options for nomad?

They were looking at something like this: http://smile.amazon.com/TecNec-DMX-3XF-CAT5-3-pin-Female-Adapter/dp/B00KUTZW3Q/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1426463891&sr=8-4&keywords=ethernet+to+dmx  but I'm not confident it would work because there is no ip address... any suggestions under $100 would be appreciated.

Thanks!

  • Unfortunately, that one won't work for you. It is a passive connector type adapter, not an active network to DMX Adapter. As such, it is only good for converting from 5pxlr to RJ45 connectors, and not for sACN to DMX, which is what you'd need to get DMX output from your Nomad Dongle. Within ETC's product family, what you'd need is the ETC Gadget(USB to DMX adapter cable,) or a one port DMX/RDM Gateway (uses the network to get DMX out.) Unfortunately, I don't believe either of those will be under $100.00. Check with your local ETC dealer for the pricing on those.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. A quick Google Search for sACN to DMX devices should turn up some items closer to your price range, but I cannot say anything about their compatibility with the ETC Nomad software. I will offer my opinion on buying items sight unseen on the internet. Be careful what you purchase, and make sure the company you purchase from stands behind their product. Sometimes the cheapest item out there isn't the way to go. That's what makes ETC such a great purveyor of control products, their dealer network.

One final note- I work for an ETC dealer, and looking at your profile, there is another one located in your town that may be able to help you out.
  • Thanks for the quick response.

I too have been searching and found the ETC gadget to be the most reliable solution and I always purchase from ETC when I can. I was just hoping someone would have a cheaper solution they could purchase before taking the leap to buy the gadget.

    Thanks again!
  • Only just over your budget, there is a superb little box available online, which is an artnet/sACN to DMX converter. The only slight disadvantage is that it's an installation product, which can mount on a DIN rail and has terminals, rather than XLR connections. It's a fantastic product, though - I've had four running in different circumstances so far, including one that's on 24/7, with no problems from any of them.

Here's the link (note: I'm in no way affiliated with the maker of these boxes, simply impressed with the product for its price) - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DMX-512-controller-Art-Net-E1-31-ACN-six-output-input-ports-ArtNet-Ethernet-/321556994192?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ade4a5890

  • Thank you very much.

I will look into this. Being an instillation product doesn't matter to me that much, I could just mount it in a small case and put strain relief's on the cables going in.

One question: Are you currently using these with Nomad or other ETC PC variants?

    Thanks again!
  • I've used them with Nomad on PC and Mac for quite some time now - I bought the first one in September 2013 (before Nomad was released) which is installed in a venue; two bought in August last year for touring. There's no reason why these boxes won't work with any ETC show control product.

    Hope that helps!
