Grouping of channels in Live Table Packed / Selected Channels Flexi-View

I'm in Live Table Packed / Selected Channels Flexi-View. If I select channels of different types then the channels are grouped by fixture type, but only within an uninterrupted channel range. I've attached an example of this from 1.3.1. In this case I've got some VL1000s & VL2000s selected, but because the VL2000 channel numbers are in between the first & last VL1000 number, the selection is displayed as 3 groups.

Is there any way that the fixtures could be grouped by type, irrespective of their channel numbers - so that in this example there would be a group of all VL1000s and a group of all VL2000s? In this case I was trying to run through a show and keep an eye on everything that these fixtures were doing in each cue - which I found harder to do with the VL1000s broken up by the VL2000s.

  • Hi David.  Thanks.  This has been in discussion (periodically) for some time.  So here's a question back.  When you are setting up your channels, what guidelines do you use?  Is is in fixture order based on the hang?   This is a question for the group at large.

    Hi Anne, I thought you might ask something like that! :)

    Normally I would assign channel numbers sequentially per fixture type, so this wouldn't be a problem. However what happened here was that extra fixtures were added to the show at a later stage, and there was no space for them in the original range. So the next most logical thing was to number the additional fixtures 184 & 185 to clone the original fixtures 84 & 85; which works quite well in some ways as I know that the 84s are AL and 85s AR, and the 100s are closer to the stage.

    I think it'd always be the case that however carefully an original design was numbered, changes to the show over time may mean that each fixture type won't always be in an uninterrupted channel range.

    Well, then.... that's the best reasoning I've heard.  And it's rather shameful to know that I'm so predictable.  Since we'd much rather sort the data by fixture type than we would support some sort of decimal channel thing (yikes!)... we will put that on the list!!

    I went to a Congo/Eos demo today with a friend (I already have Ion), but if I remember correctly Congo does have a way to sort by Fixture type more like the Hog does. Couldn't you model the view after that rather than have something like decimal channels (which also will get confusing for those who are dimmer doubling!).

    Hi Brian.  We aren't going to do anything with decimal channels (sorry to be confusing).  There are a variety of options for a fixtures view and how to access it.  More to follow on that front!

    I know it doesn't always fix the problem, but you could also move some channels in patch to squeeze in the new ones. When you use [Move To], it moves them not only in the patch but also in cues.

    Hey Luke... that is a good thing to remind everyone of.  But it seems as though we should still investigate a fixture ordering scheme, as there may be other reasons why fixtures of the same type are not sequentially patched.     But you are right, if its just an adder, Move To in patch is very effective. And it moves all of the show data.  In case some of you haven't found this, [Move to] to accessed by selecting a channel and then double hitting the [Copy to] key in patch.

    Josh showed me that feature the other day and I love it.

     

    As far as channel layout goes this is my 2 cents.

     As an electrician and/or programmer I rarely get to specify my channel layout. I get a lighting plot form a designer and have to execute the design. In some cases the channeling make visual sense to me. But there are those times when an LD numbers channels in a manner that hurts my poor electrician head. In these situations I would like to be able to have a custom channel layout for me that make sense to me. It would be great if I can create different views between the VRI and the desk.
