led's flash on each cue

I'm sure led's vary from one to the other how sensitive they are to percentages and therefore possibly make this question difficult to answer.

I have Chauvet QWash 560Z Led movers. When each cue is activated they flash on slightly but enough to be very much seen on stage, then as the cue timing is running they fade into whatever intensity they are recorded at. My guess is that is because they really don't have true 0 - 100 dimming and therefore their 1% or whatever first triggers them is bright enough they show right away.

So I was wondering if anyone out there might have some suggestions to help reduce this. Some cues are strictly led's coming on and others include conventionals.

  • Hi Jeff,

I have some Q560Zs and have had a lot of trouble with their dimming. So much so that I've mainly abandoned them in favour of ETC Selador D60s, and only use the Q560Zs on shows / cues where the snap-on / snap-off at 1% is not too much of a distraction.

You could try seeing if any of the dimming options under the Mode parameter improve things for you - these are supposed to smooth out the dimming - but I find that anything other than 'DIM0' results in a significant lag when you do want the fixtures to snap out.

I've tried programming out the snap by delaying the Q560Zs until the rest of the state has reached an intensity where the snap on isn't so noticeable; which has helped, but it's still not great. The other problem I find with them is that they glare quite badly, and there's no means of fitting top-hats or similar, so if the fixtures are visible in the rig they will always draw attention when they first come on.

    Cheers,
    David
  • Well it's about time I finally was able to actually address this issue in this show I just completed and your delay suggestion worked great for this one. I've never used Delay and thank another post for suggesting how to do it. I went to each cue that had the z's come on immediately along with conventionals and I delayed the z intensities ranging from .01 to .03 seconds depending on the application and they weren't nearly as noticeable snapping on.
I totally understand the difference in the z's and Seladors, just can't afford Seladors right now and they don't zoom or move, so I have a good combination fixture that gets me by. The greatest thing about the Z's is how they want to start strobing and random moving when they lose dmx. It's a very random thing and only happens once in a great while when I shut down the console at the end of the shows. Robe has no input on the matter other than don't use a terminator on them and keep them on their own dmx feed. Pretty cool ey!
    Thanks for the input.
