custom fixtures

Creating a custom fixture. In some attributes; color select, gobo select specifically I can't assign whole number (15, 42, 253, etc.) user min and max figures. I can type in a whole number but it automatically reverts back to an automatic fraction; 24.5, 32.4, etc. when hitting enter.

I will have to admit I don't completely understand the difference between min and max and user min and user max, but I have always just entered the same numbers across the board and experienced no issues doing so, and used it until the actual fixture is added to the ETC library. Maybe this won't matter either when I get ready to use the fixture but I wanted to ask.

  • Color wheels and gobo wheels have particular rules that are enforced - there is only one "user value" step for each gobo. With this rule, the console can then show you frame numbers for each wheel position. The workaround would be to change the parameter name to a different one, which allows more open user min/max values.
  • Thank you for the reply Hans. I kind of figured the numbers didn't matter and most likely populated based on the number of parameters in the channel. Everything seems to be working fine. Just don't understand the difference between each set of min/max values and exactly what they do. I also see that what those numbers end up being by default depends on parameter is selected.
BTW I notice there are a lot of parameters that have say the basic one then there might be several of the same but they have a number after them, but not necessarily 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. Some can be 10, 11, 12, etc. For just one example: Color Effect has Color Effect and also Color Effect 4, 5, 6, etc. but don't see a 1, 2, or 3. What do those types of parameters mean?
Also I am previewing a mover right now that is not in the library. It has a lamp control parameter; channel 14. I chose the parameter from the Control section and assigned the various values however don't see it anywhere in About. I had to find a random parameter that assigned specific boxes to show up in ML Controls where I could control the lamp on and off. Do the controls only appear in About when ETC sets up fixtures in the permanent library or was I possibly doing something wrong? I didn't want to send in a request for this fixture to be added if I end up not purchasing them, so building it from scratch.
  • - user min/max: let's take the example of Pan: in the min max column you enter the dmx values you want to send, 0 and 65535. or if you want to limit the movement maybe 2500 and 42000. user min/max are the values that you work with, so maybe -270 to 270 (degrees).

    - lamp control: yes it can work for custom fixtures as well. did you (in the profile editor) click on the LampCtrls softkey and then create the automated sequences for each action you want to do?

    - library: please post a new thread to this forum with a link to the manual for this fixture. other people will be very happy as well, if they find the fixture in the library...

Hey thanks for the reply. So as I understand it basically now, the standard min and max are the ranges the fixture can use and the user min and max is what the user want's the fixture to do? So whatever ranges are in the User min and max is what the console will tell the fixture to do no matter what is in the other two columns, of course unless in the other columns they are assigned numbers lower. Is that a fairly close pretty basic interpretation?
The best I can remember in lamp control is when I built the fixture - on that channel I clicked on the type box and it populated the choice screen. I then clicked on the control section and it populated another screen. I then picked lamp control and then entered the specific parameters based on the manual for the control section. When I selected the fixture @Full then used About the box was empty.
Regarding the library request. I don't want to submit it at this time because there are some parameter issues that I see that don't match the manual and I won't submit something to ETC unless I know it is correct. I hope that is ok. I don't want them to end up with calls from users that their fixture is not working properly, just because it was built from wrong info in the manual. However once I find out the info is accurate I will submit it for the benefit of others who may end up getting it. They claim they sell a lot of them but I don't know.
I'm going through a big hassle right now about one of their LED fixtures that has the Color channel split into like 33 sections but using a dmx tester I can only duplicate 19 different ones. When I use the manual 33 parameters in color many of the selections remain the same.
They don't realize how vital the accuracy needs to be. I think they are used to people using faders for the channels and that just does not cut it. So that's another one I want to submit but not until I see it is accurate.
Looking out for ETC a bit. :-)
  • The easiest way to think of the User Min/Max is as a display item. IE what you will 'see' in the Encoder Display - for most fixtures these follow some form of 'real world' value, like Pan/Tilt in degrees or Iris in percentage. It may use 0-255 DMX bits for Iris, but in the display we can have it as 0-100%. It's not a "limit" within the DMX range (for that you would adjust the other columns not the USER columns), it is purely a text display. Hope that clears it up.
