Nomad Puck ETC Net 2

I understand that making etc net 2 protocals work on etc nomad for mac and pc would be very difficult beacuse of all the diffrent operating systems, network drivers, and chipsets. All the nomad pucks on the otherhand run the same operating system and have the same hardware. Weither you buy and element, ion, or any other light board from etc they all support etc net 2. There is no reason the nomad puck couldn't support net 2 also.

My theater is wired for net 2 and I cannot afford the cost to upgrade to net 3. I would love to run the nomad puck as a backup for my Ion.

  • Curious how many Net 3 devices you need to buy to get your system compatible with a Nomad Net3 system ?.

    I'm in a similar situation, with 7 Net 2 nodes that would need replacing. That's not cheap but then I'm OK as I'm not wanting a Nomad for backup. If that were a burning need I'd buy a used Ion as it would be more functional then a Nomad system.

    After doing some more research I was going to buy an ion rpu( since that supports net 2) although I didn't think about buying a used ion. I will probably end up buying the cheeper option of the two.

    As for upgrading to net 3 I would have to replace the cem+ modules in all 3 of my dimmer racks, my unison system, and 8 net 2 nodes.

    You may want to have a dealer/tech take a look at your system to get a better idea of upgrade options. CEM+ is capable of receiving sACN as long as you have the right software version (and that can be upgraded without replacing hardware). For your Unison system you could take the CMEi off the network and just use a 2-port Gateway connected to the DMX In and Out ports (assuming you just have one CMEi, of course).

    From there you could selectively replace your NET2 nodes with Gateways based on which ones are most critical to back up. Doing that over time would allow for a more budget-friendly approach to getting a fully sACN compatible system.
