ION fan / cooling / filter hardware

We have an Ion and a Gio in our event space.  While the Gio is only used for events, the Ion runs 24/7; we have an X-Keys setup so the banquet department or others can bring up or change room lights via macros when we're not there.

The issue is, it's a pretty dirty place, and a lot of dirt gets inside the Ion.  We cleaned it last week after it overheated & shut down, and there was a layer of glunk choking the space between the heat sink and fan on the processor.  That was about 6 months after the previous console cleaning.  We have two questions:

– Can we replace the filter on the air intake to a more efficient one, and upgrade the intake fan to compensate?

– Can we replace the heat sink & fan on the CPU?  Our head electrician, who used to build PC's, tells me that an aftermarket one can reduce processor temperature by several degrees.

It's also an older unit, and eligible for the Windows 7 upgrade.  Will swapping the motherboard help us out at all?

Thanks!

  • Hi Jason,

I'm a bit confused about the air filter - I don't think we have a filter installed normally on it (we certainly have plenums for cooling and intake grills, but no filter per se). If you're looking at the power supply - we generally don't delve into the supply itself. If that's having issues, we recommend replacing the power supply.

About the heat sink and fan - yes, it is possible to replace the heat sink and fan, though we'd advise replacing it with the one we've specified (just as that's the only one we've tested to work). Give phone support a call (800-688-4116) and we can get you the part number for your hardware version of the Ion.

If you go with the Windows 7 upgrade, you'll get a new motherboard/CPU/fan combination installed at the factory. The power supply remains the same (but we could replace it at the same time as an additional repair).

    Thanks!
