RFR antenna replacement?

Do i need a special antenna for an RFR, or can i use any 2.4GHz WiFi antenna?

I know the RFR uses Zigbee which operates on the same frequencies as 2.4GHz WiFi, but i also know that some digital protocols need different antenna features than others.

We managed to break the original that came with our RFR. I picked up a 2.4GHz WiFi antenna at Fry's and it worked great - in fact noticeably better than the original.

But it is more than twice as long as the original, making the RFR even more difficult to hold. For the moment we swapped it with the one from the P-LCD-H base, but i want to buy the right part and a spare.

I may try a soft wire type antenna, i think i have seen them for 2.4GHz at the local ham radio outlet.

Also i thought the too long antenna would work well on the RFR access point, but that antenna does not seem to be removable - or do i just need to open the box?

  • Hi Michael,

The ETC part numbers for the antennas are:
    N1075 - Net3 RFR Antenna, Handset
    N1080 - Base station antenna

(For anyone viewing this later - it is always a good idea to call your local ETC office to verify part numbers)

There are just a few screws holding the RFR base station cover on - you are certainly welcome to take a look. We don't recommend alternate antennas beyond what we've supplied (for the simple reason that we haven't tested them). If you have more questions, feel free to give the LA office or Middleton a call and we can chat a bit more about it.

    Thanks!
