Ion keyboard only shortcuts now?

I just received a new ION based on Windows 7 instead of the older XP version which I've been using for quite some time (we have 3 across different campuses).

Using the keyboard provided, I am unable to type in commands normally with every key being locked to a shortcut regardless of whether scroll lock is on or not.

Was the ability to use a keyboard to type "Thru" instead of just "T" and Ion replacing it with "Thru" removed? Is there a setting to allow me to change the keyboard back to an actual keyboard instead of a bunch of hot keys and if so, where?

Since I have a lot of other responsibilities and can type quite fast I have never taken the time to learn the shortcut key mapping and I can't say I want to or have the time to learn them now. If I wanted to use one key to execute a command I would just use the keys on the surface itself (which I also haven't memorized). It will severely slow me down when programming to have to stop and learn where each command is located.

  • Hey Jonathan,

Have you checked to see if Caps Lock was on? Weird things started happening to me one time when I Alt-Tab bewteen EOS OLE and other programs. One time, without noticing, I brushed Caps Lock when returning to EOS. When I started to call up channels, the Num Keypad, and all of the standard shortcuts (@,Thru,FL,Cue etc) changed to functions as if I was depressing Alt or Ctrl. After 10min of craziness, I happen to notice my Caps Lock light was on. I'm also using Win7.

    just throwing it out there

    Hope it helps!

    Cheers,
    Johnny
  • Hey Jonathan, no worries, everything is still there.
In 2.3 a lot of hotkeys changed and Scroll Lock was one of them. The reason for this was to make it work on a Mac as well (that doesn't have this key).
You can use F8 now for the same function that scroll lock used to have.

And since you only found out on one of your consoles, this means that you have different software versions. I would suggest downloading the newest software, reading the release notes and then installing the software on your other consoles.
  • Hi Jonathan

In the long term you should try learning the position of the physical keys as this is the quickest way to programme even if you can type really quickly.

  • Many thanks!
This is a relief to have that feature back as I spent about 4 times as long as normal trying to program the weekend service without being able to just type it. The extra time was mostly having to search for where the key is or what combination will actually get the command on top of searching for a way to get the normal keyboard back (without any luck).

I was surprised to find that we had a version behind installed since I have the Ion's registered and I'm signed up for email news when there is an update. I never saw one so I was still on 2.2. I should probably just make a habit of checking in.

I will update the rest as soon as I can.
  • I have learned some of the shortcuts and where certain keys are on the faceplate, but even from trying to program yesterday without being able to type them directly I am not sure it will actually be faster.
What I found was that I had to move my hands a lot back and forth instead of being able to keep my hands centered on the keyboard and type nearly any string of commands I wanted.
Being able to touch type is not much help with a keyboard full of hotkeys since I have to think through unusual strings of letters which defeat the learned responses of typing.

If my job was largely spent programming and using the Ion I am certain I would get much better at knowing how and where to find the keys I need to do tasks. As it is, I program a worship service in a cue list then have a volunteer hitting go for the transitions while I am usually working in a different position like Sound or Technical Director. There are only a few times a year I get to actually run lights live for certain special events.
